Word on the Carfree mailing list is that he was mown down by a drunk driver Saturday night and died
Sunday morning.

A sad loss.

I remember the first time I found Ken's web pages was by way of a yahoo search for something
cycling-related. I think my question was only partially answered on that occasion, but I realised I
had stumbled across a treasure-trove of educative and entertaining articles about cycling, that I
quickly bookmarked and returned to several times. No-doubt many of us feel and think much the same
way as he did about cycling, but he expressed it so much better than most of us ever could.

It is a sad loss to cycling.

I read much of Ken's site when preparing for an epic tour of India -- and most helpful, valuable and
(indeed) inspirational it was.

Maybe someone should capture / copy the site so that it is not lost if / when his family / ISP turn
off the computer it is on. There is much good work there which should be preserved.

Can one of our techies copy it asap? Guy might be an obvious choice assuming he is not feeling too
sore after his recent brush with Smidsy.

Jimmy D. Rodgers, 29, of Scottsboro has been charged with murder in the traffic-related death of cyclist Kenneth P. Kifer, 57, of Scottsboro.

According to a report filed in the Circuit Clerk’s office by Alabama Trooper Terry Thomas, Kifer was riding a bicycle in the north bound lane of County Road 21, three miles north of Scottsboro in the Pikeville area.

He was struck by the 1986 Chevrolet S-10 pick up driven by Rodgers who was traveling south on the same road. The report states that Rodgers was driving at a high rate of speed, under the influence of drugs and alcohol.

Kifer was taken to Huntsville Hospital where he died a short time later.

Rodgers was arrested at the scene and charged with first-degree assault and driving under the influence. Those charges were upgraded to murder Tuesday morning.

According to the Scottsboro Police Department Rodgers was released from the city jail just four hours before the Saturday night accident. He had been arrested Friday for DUI and violation of the open container law.

Kifer was known in the area and throughout the country as a world class athlete, cyclist and writer who chose to live the life of a naturalist. A clerical error in the original report resulted in Kifer being identified as Ken Kiefer.

OK, I have now made a mirror of the site. I had no idea how big it was! The mirror is 25Mb, or 18Mb
as a compressed tar archive. I could host this but don't have much bandwidth so I'm not particularly
keen to. If anyone is prepared to host it I'd be happy to send the archive file, but in the meantime
I have a copy and it is safe.

I'm Ken Kifer's daughter-in-law. I came to this group hoping to get word to the online biking
community about his death, but it seems that the news has already reached it. Nathan and I very much
want to keep his website up, but as we both tend toward Ludditism neither of us knows how to do
this. I noticed one post (I'm sorry, I've forgotten the name of the poster,) who offered to host it.
We would love it if someone could continue his site and legacy.

Funeral arrangements have not yet been decided. We're not sure whether to bury him in a plot his
father purchased him a few years ago, or to scatter his ashes in the woods he so dearly loved.

Arrangements are being made through Callyer Butler Funeral Home in Gasden AL.

I'm in shock, and don't know what else to write at this point. Ken was such a wonderful person...

Please feel free to send this message to whoever cared about Ken and would like to read it. I know
he had many friends on the internet, and I have no way to know how to contact them.

"Rodgers was just recently released from jail, after a Sept. 1 arrest for second-degree possession
of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia and illegal possession of an alcoholic beverage. He

brought his bike for everything from gear adjustments to brake checks and tire replacement.

"I was about to cry, I was trying to hold back, I couldn't get over it," say the Partin's, who own
the shop. They're shocked by his death. He was in the shop this past Friday, one last visit from a
friend they knew so well.

"He had a beard, real skinny," Judy Partin says. "But he was a funny sort of guy, he always had
something to joke about or tell us about his trips."

"Real likeable," Robin Partin says. "I like to hear him talk because of his accent, but he was a
real nice guy."

"We sit down, talk, drunk coke, talk about old times," Dyral Partin adds.

"He's just so nice, he's beyond nice," Renee Partin remembers her friend.

Kifer was on his bike near Pikeville Saturday evening. Police say Jimmy Don Rodgers, driving under
the influence, hit the cyclist. He later died at Huntsville Hospital.

"I just wish a lot of other people could've met Ken, gotten to to know him," Dyral says. "And just
let him sit you back and tell you some of the stories."

"We miss him a lot, and things aren't going to be the same without him," Renee adds.

Now the Partin's will do without his frequent visits, something for which they're not yet ready.

"He was a person you could grow on real easy," Robin says.

"A lot of people, he might have looked rough to him, but to us, he was just kin," Judy finishes.

Blimey! I e-mailed him last year to ask if I could put a link to his site on mine. I loved reading
his articles, especially the commuting and getting fit sections. Terrible news :-(

This is awful news and made all the worse due to the circumstances.

I only recently "found" Ken after following the link from Simons pages. When reading his journals
and camping advice he had my mind wondering into the woods and camping areas alongside him whilst he
setup camp, prepared his meal and bedded down for the night.

A mega loss.
