I totally agree with you, Peter. I only have my cell phone with me in case my car breaks down and I need to get help. I don't yak on it while I'm driving. I don't yak on it while I'm in a store. I don't yak on it when I'm in a movie theater. I don't yak on it, period. I was driving last night and this idiot pulled out of a cross street in front of me while holding a cell phone to their ear. I'm a vigilent driver; I knew this person wasn't paying attention so I slowed down. Had I also been yakking away on my cell phone and not paying attention we might have had a nice little crash on our hands.

I don't think that anybody claimed that using a cell phone while driving isn't a distraction, nor did anybody claim that driving while distracted isn't a risk. The issue was what should be done about it. I contend that if driving with a cell phone is made illegal because of the distraction involved, then ALL similar distractions ought to be made illegal, including the transport of children.

You bored, Peter? Dunno how many times we have gone over this.... Now, if they had said that "cooking while driving" was a distraction - then you would have got my attention <yawn>

By your logic we cannot take steps to prevent any kind of cancer unless we prevent all of them.
How silly is that!

That's already been dealt with. ;-)
It's called child car seats. Your kids are strapped down now until they are nearly 8 years old.

How old are you Peter ? A similar study notes that a person in their 30's using a cell phone is as dangerous as a person in their mid 50's NOT using a cell phone. Be careful what you ask for....

Now that you mention it ...
When I'm in the RV making breakfast, the cruise control sometimes drops out and I have to go up front and reset it. Can I just baste the eggs with a little beer, covered, so I don't end up with hard-cooked eggs? (Going back and forth up to the wheel distracts from cooking the eggs properly, not to mention my toast getting cold from sitting in the "up" toaster too long.)

His logic is nothing of the such. The difference is that we can do something about many forms of distraction, but the only ones that people do talk about are cell phones and smoking. The studies also note that changing a radio station also increases the chance of an accident, but nobody talks about banning that. Chaging your climate control also increases your chance of an accident, but nobody talks about banning that.
Cancer on the other hand, is not a voluntary action. You treating it as such is intellectually dishonest.
Oh, and by the way, we DO try to prevent all the forms of cancer that we can. We don't pick and choose like you would have people do with driving distractions.

NONSENSE! Driving while talking on the phone has nothing to do with transporting children. You can certainly ingore the strapped in crying child but you can't ignore your boss or your girlfriend or your husband/whife yelling at you on the cell phone. Oh, wait, you can. If you don't answer your cell phone. Just let it be. Leave it alone. Don't talk on the phone.
As for the kids in the back seat..., just say shut up! Or Mommy is going to kill you when we get home! LOL
I was never allowed to yell when I went to the store with mommy. I was never allowed to scream and kick and have tantrums if I didn't get a pack of gum or a candy bar when I went to the store with mommy. Why is it kids are allowed to get away with this behavior today? And please, don't tell me they all suffer from ADD and peanut allergies and hence, should be coddled 😉

How about keeping kids away from hot pots of boiling oil or water or simmering rice? Would that get your attention? None of which are done in a car, so your point is moot.

Um, how many kids do you have Jill? Or lemme put it this way: how often do you drive with kids in your car?

Because now it is practically "illegal" to "smack/hit" your kids...
And please, don't tell me

You missed my point completely. We all *know* it is dangerous to drive while drinking/talking on a cell phone/fiddling with the radio/reading/whatever.. so why keep bringing it up?

Which is total [censored]. Don't hit your kids hard enough to leave marks. Once they know you mean it, the threat is sufficient.
I knew my dad would take a belt to my ass at home if I did not pay attention. He never had to do it much. Once I knew he meant it, the mere threat would get his point across.

Jay-zus. Did you get this from "Child-abuse 101" ? <Cathy shakes head, thinking "I can't believe you said that"> Please tell me it "came out wrong"?

Could you please tell this to MY girlfriend ?
Besides, Bob's point is that parents are distracted by their children while driving. This distraction is often greater than the distraction of a cell phone. I can't recall how many times I have seen parents turn around to yell at their children in the back seat. A recentl local case involved a mother who turned around to yell at her children and ran over two people on a motorcycle.
