The EX has more Alloy parts than the Giant.

What do you want to use the bike for???

If you use either of those bikes offroad, they will be broken in less then a month. I used to work at a sporting goods store that sold bikes as their bike tech. As you can imagine, these bikes were not high end machines. The people that would ride them regularly (usually kids) would bring them back for repairs all of the time, because they would just break. If you are serious at all about going offroad, consider making a trip down to your local bike shop and talking to them about what your goals are in a bike. Good luck.

I want to use it mainly for receational use on road and offroad in the bush. No major downhill or big jumps.

The bikes listed appear to be for rec use onroad.I dont know how they would handle offroad use.Have u checked the trading post??? There are some good bargains around now as the shops bring in the 2004 range.My mate just got a Scott for $1200 when the normal price was $1700...

For 400 id be checking 2nd hand bikes rather than the new ones..

Have a look at the DK General Lee 24". Sure, there's no suspension there, and no gears, but you get a bike that'll take the knocks and come back for more. You'll get street cred by the bucket load and the best introduction to off-road riding you can get for the money. And you'll get it for $400.

Let's face it, $400 buys you a lot of headaches and not much bike. With something like the DK you get less bike, but what you get is of much higher quality. Don't be misled by crappy forks and bottom-of-range gears. They look good but perform poorly.
