From various threads on either the touring or the bicycle advocacy lists, it looks like Alex Wetmore
will put up a mirror site of Ken Kifer's site once it is clear that he has permission from the
family (which it appears that he will get).

We who appreciate their efforts need to stay alert for authentic means to support this effort. I
posted Ken's death notice to my state's cycling (NOT advocacy) organizations and it was received
like a fart in church. One response and that to doubt the report's authenticity.

The gist of it is that the driver was a repeated DUI offender who had been arrested the day before
for DUI and open container violations. He had been released from jail just four hours before he
killed Ken. He was driving a Chevy S-10 pickup at very high speed and under the influence of drugs
and alcohol. He was driving south while Ken was riding north in the opposite lane. The driver was
originally charged with assault but the charge has now been upgraded to murder.

Someone else pointed out this appropriate quote from Ken's web site:

"[O]ver the years, many authorities and motorists have mistakenly come to see driving a motor
vehicle as an unrevocable right, and thus even drivers who have caused numerous collisions due to
speeding, reckless behavior, drinking, or other disorders are allowed unrestricted driving and are
often not punished in any way, even after killing someone due to their clearly faulty behavior.
Fortunately, we are beginning to see an end to the concept of the highway as being a wild frontier
and the last lawless area. I think we should take traffic infractions seriously. The purpose of
streets and highways should be to efficiently and safely transport people and goods from one area to
another. They should not be places for people to work out their aggressions."

Obviously this hasn't happened yet. But maybe events like Ken's death will galvanize the rest of us
to help *make* it happen.

I am on the touring list that Ken was a frequent poster on and enjoyed his stories. Ken's daughter
in law posted about his tragic death yesterday to the list. It is indeed true that he has been
killed. Hopefully justice will be served and the guilty party punished!

What a terrible way I expressed myself! NO, I was thinking, the page is valuable to me, and it must
have been to him, and while I don't know for sure I don't expect it to be around much longer. I
don't maintain a web-page, anything I took would be because he valued it and offered it and I value
it. It is just for my enriching.

Of course, in any event, the copyright doesn't cover the knowledge he imparted which I want. It only
protects his particular EXPRESSION of that knowledge.

"Repeat DUI offender" should be an undefined term because there should be NO SUCH THING.

A dog like this might be entitled to one bite, but upon the second conviction, should have its eyes
put out so that it CANNOT drive. Taking away licenses is meaningless.

Yes, you can delete posts in general. The details are in the RFCs that no one reads any more (except
