  1. Someone mentioned to me that he and another person had ridden a tandem recumbent where the two sit
side by side with the two wheels in between them. Does anyone have any information on this? Just
curious. He did say that starting off was a bit of a trick.

    Sounds...ummm... tricky. I like this solution: justtwobikes.comdual.htm

A two-wheeled tandem? I don't know such a bike, but check some different types out here :
    dantele.netlt Some Sociable types there.

I remember seeing one called the "Broad Bean" about eight or ten years ago. I can't remember who did
it, but it was finished to professional standards. Several BHPC worthies tried it out during the
race meeting in Leicester that year, and didn't appear to have too much trouble. It was LWB & USS.

By definition, the riders on a tandem will be seated front and back, not side by side.

  6. It would be interesting to see a two-wheeled recumbent "sociable". I saw a two-wheeled upright
"sociable" a few years ago, but didn't have a chance to ask the riders about coordination, balance,
etc. A couple of Web links to two-wheeled upright "sociables" are:

and by whose definition would that be?

    Thanks, Mark.

I"m sorry I don't read Dutch. This looks like a trike (you can see the botom of the right rear wheel
in the first picture). It looks like fun, though.

It is a trike. A side-by-side recumbent bicycle would be a *bit* difficult to balance, I think. Any
way this one was designed for handicapped and convalescent (sp?) passengers. It's actually designed
at Flevobike; they had one standing around when I went for a test ride in the new Versatile

Well, "tandem" comes from Latin and means "at length", BUT it was referring to time. At some point,
someone mis-applied it to two-up bicycles and used the "at length" to describe the long two person
bikes. Some dedicated searching could likely locate the bicycle history of the mis-applied Latin
term. So, by definition (correct or not) "tandem" applies to front to back tandems.

Not just bikes: I have seen certain airplanes and microcars referred to as "tandem two-seaters".

Actually, Latin aside, "tandem" describes a horse-drawn carriage in which two horses are harnessed
one behind the other. I'm reasonably sure that this usage of the word pre-dates bicycles.

  15. Speaking of sociable recumbents...

Check out the Quadribent which pairs up two EZ-1 recumbents and is available through nearly any
    LBS(including ours).
