Man, Michael Wardian, 31, won his third marathon in four weeks at Ocean

Don't embarass the moron. He's still in a fetal position from his last
crash n burn marathon a few months ago.

  3. Hey T - Man,

Let's take a look at Wardian and these races you note. He said at
Ocean City he virtually had the road to himself. It was described at
the Shamrock Wardian also ran without a shadow.

He's a good runner that cherry picks, many of us on this ng can do
this, no? If we really look at Wardian and his ’03 US National Cross
Country Championships (57th of 70 in the Men's 12K with a time of
    45:52), we're not impressed....are we?

Okay, I grant him his ’05 Boston 2:25:43 is great. But his 33rd place
at the US Olympic Trails in '04....? And in his one NYC Marathon
appearance he clocked a 2:45:44. There might be 100-200 runners in
my running club that can out perform that number.

Why do you highlight him Mr. T Runner? His JFK50 miler of 7:54? His
150 Mile Marathon Des Sables & 26th place? The sub 15 Hour Himalayan
Stage Race? He holds a special place in the heart of Ultra guys? is
    that it?

He said is main goal for ’05 was to win the Marine Corps Marathon. He
took 12 with a 2:31. He now says he wants to make the Olympic team
and that's his most important goal. Okay if that's so, I don't think
the way to do that is by racing 150 mile races in the desert. Nor is
it by setting Treadmill Marathon Records (another feather in his cap).

I'm just putting Wardian into perspective. I see a very good runner,
but an unfocused runner. If he's serious about what he calls "his
goal", it's not going to come through practices like racing in 3
    marathons in 4 weeks.

If we're going to be honest, sure, he's cherry picked some events and
wins/runs alone. Meanwhile there are two dozen plus American runners
with the same goal as Wardian....but they are not cherry picking
marathons and racing 3 marathons in 4 weeks. No, they have a regime, a
discipline focused regime and will likely give Wardian a thorough ass
kicking in the Olympic Trails, just as he got handed to him in '04.

Olympic and Professional Marathoners don't do what Wardian does for a
reason. If you looked at Wardian's times, it's clear he's racing in
these marathons he enters, not using them as training events. I am
just illustrating inconsistency and a total disconnect with really
knowing what it takes to be an Olympic Marathoner.

He's a local star, but that's about it. I'd rather see him realize
his most important goal (making the Olympic team), rather than ring up
    some local cherry picks.

Most of us, but not you.

I don't see how this contradicts anything Lance has posted.

2:33 is a pretty fast time, but Michael Wardian has run 2:21 before. If
anything, this supports Lances argument that you can't run marathons that
frequently and perform at 100% for all of them.

He didn't have anyone pushing him, so what might he have done time wise
if he did? I agree (surprise!) that he's pretty erratic and it's
probably due to racing so often. But I disagree that his times in these
3 races say he wasn't using them as training runs. I suspect he might
have cheery picked/got lucky with the competition AND be using them as
training both. As for the Oly trials, IMHO he is currently on the
outside cusp so maybe feels like you that racing is what hardens you and
    makes you faster :-)

    __

So therefore you are saying his 2:30 to 2:33 performances in these
events represents his training pace. If you looked at his results
over time you would see these times represent his race efforts, not his
training efforts. Those training times simply don't synch up with his
    race results.

    _

that was said in the context of pendejo who at the time had a dozen or
two races under his belt and in the context of 10K and under races, not
marathons. A guy like Wardian is not ascending that learning curve and
really has no business racing in 3 marathons in 4 weeks *if* you want
to buy into and believe his goal is to make the Olympic team.

So what's on your agenda TrailRunner? Ohlone 50K on May 21?

Nah, been there, done that enough but will be volunteering. Still
thinking about the Thaoe Rim 100M in July but with all the wet weather
we've had, I haven't been able to get motivated to train enough. Am more
likely to do some "feats" as opposed to races this summer. The 2 at the
top the list are the Wonderland Trail and the Rouge River Trail with the
CA section of the American Discovery Trail in contention.

Ummm, no. No one posting lately can do a 2:33:21. Some can't even do a
    3:51.

It totally contradicts Lance. He says that you can't run fast if you run
often (Eddy Hellybuck?) and this guy does it frequently.
