working on a cheap single speed conversion for a commuter- here's what
i got so far:
schwinn traveler frame, hozo dropouts
BB: ball cup type, probably stock, need to overhaul. seems to be around
123-125mm in length?
crank: will maybe use a older shimano 600 42 T with short stack bolts,
have other options too
rear wheel: i have several options:
1- rear wheel (wolber rim, 105 hub) from an older (red) specialized
sirrus 7-spd (shimano 105 group).haven't checked if it's a cassette or
freewheel yet, anyone know? this wheel also needs to be trued anyway,
it has a small wobble in it.
2- rear wheel from older miyata 310, 6-spd shimano freewheel i think,
but the rim is a clunky looking araya. i like the wolber rim better.
sprocket: i have another wheel (sew-up) with a single-speed sprocket on
it, reads shimano mx-30? on it, doesn't make much or any of a racheting
sound on the reverse, is it broken or supposed to be kinda silent? how
do i remove it? has 3 raised splines or something facing to the side
with big notches (not like the 3 notches of a bb/track lockring), and 2
small holes at 180 degrees from each other.
was thinking to put the sprocket on the wheel #1, respace and redish.
i have a sweet Tbone stem and scott AT2 LF bar to use also.
as you can see, i'm trying to do it on the cheap, it's more fun that
way anyway.
any help appreciated on my questions above, and suggestions, email or
post if appropriate!
thanks!!
