  1. I had my Cateye Opticube sitting on my desk. Somebody sent me an SMS.
The SMS caused the Cateye light to turn on.

If a call is made to the mobile the Cateye light will switch on and off
    a few times.
The phone has to be reasonably close to the light.

I now have a visual warning that an SMS is about to arrive.

    Cheers

I've got a variation on that. I use my HRM as my watch and find that
power tools and airport metal detectors both trigger the HRM to start.
So if the chest strap battery runs out, just strap a circular saw to
    your chest. 😉

Having seen the light, that's one way to cut through the opposition, and deter feral car drivers as well :p

Or change it for a Lucas - 'prince of sudden unexplained darkness' as they
are known in alt.fan.landrover ... it'll never come on again!

  10. Aha - a possible bike-mounted mobile phone detection device! Can you rig it up with a callback function (ie: when you're riding about) that emanates an pre-recorded message on the same frequency to any errant motorist within 20m to GET OFF THE FECKING PHONE.

    Just a idea. 😉

We don't have a DaveC, and judging by the loss of a space at each
increment, you'd need a negative space between Dave and C anyway. Hmmm.

I was confused when I first met you: "but that's a guy's name!?". But
    Larry just takes the cake!

    Damn Cake stealer.

It is *still* hailing. 30 minutes later. I think it might be cold
    out there.

Always carry a short length of fibre-optic cable. If you get lost,
then you can drop it on the ground, wait ten minutes, and ask the
backhoe operator how to get back to civilization. -- Mike Andrews in NANAE

Or change it for a Lucas - 'prince of sudden unexplained darkness' as

I've always known them as Lucas PoD (Prince of Darkness). I've only
ever owned British cars and every one of 'em has been Lucas PoD
equipped and as a result I believe I've seen nearly half of the
possible "Weirdnesses" available....:-) The dynamo equipped Hillman
Minx with its positive earth system that I had about 30 years ago was
pretty damn good at destroying batteries. violently and repeatedly. And
how anyone could manage to build a simple, common or garden variety
kettering ignition system so bloody intermittant is beyond me but Lucas
PoD managed it. With ease, and never the same problem twice.

For the OP. Do NOT change to Lucas PoD electrics - darkness is only a
MINOR problem. Lucas PoD electrics can also do fire and battery
explosions to great effect. Insulation melting - bah. It can do that
    while turned OFF...:-)
