Why we cyclists see more wildlife and peds don't see us? In soon to be yesterday's Metro:
Sneaking Up: If you want to sneak up on an animal, it is probably best not to do it on foot, scientists have discovered. Animals' brains are 'hard-wired' to detect the foot movements of predators, research by a Canadian team suggests. Even newborn chicks could detect movement on the periphery of their vision. The idea for the study came after a team member's daughter got close to wild rabbits on her bicycle.

The UEA campus at Naaarch has a large resident population of bunnies. On occasions when Nathan has been on campus with me, spotting said bunnies he quipped, "No need to be a starving student here then."

So plenty of fresh protein within easy reach of the enterprising student at the UEA ;-)
You joke, but a couple of foreign students were expelled after some of the campus ducks were found in their kitchen...
Must admit... I find this strange. The ducks are wild. If they were caught humanely and killed humanely, then I have no qualms about students 'eating wild' Was it a case of, I wonder, it's okay to eat meat if it's from the supermarket, but catch it & kill it yourself is worthy of expulsion? If it is, I find that somewhat hypocritical of the UEA.
I have caught, killed & cooked fish... but not from UEA grounds, from the North Sea :-)

I used to live in a village with a village green and duck pond. Every Christmas the stock of ducks on the duck pond used to get depleted substantially. Where I have an issue is the people doing the depleting were not really catching wild ducks humanely. They were simply trying to avoid paying for their Christmas dinner in the easiest way by taking semi-tame ducks. Its a bit like the people who cut down trees in Thetford to avoid having to pay for their Christmas tree.

Is that what "killing a duck humanely" means? Choosing one that's not too easy, can still put up a good fight, it won't be cheating. I would have thought farmyard ducks would generally get quite tame before they got to the roasting dish.

Any farm yard duck that survives the attentions of the farm yard cats would surely have to be one of the most vicious, evil things out there?
The ducks my mother used to breed didn't have any trouble with our cats (one of which was known to catch things as big as moorhens). The most vicious evil things out there would be the geese, but they still tasted pretty good.

Its when you get nose to nose with a huge stag at 2 meters that you start to think "damm, maybe I shouldn't have fitted bar ends"
