2 or 3 miles is hardly worth getting a bike for but you might find yourself
doing more than that!
My recommendation is not to buy on line but to go to a good local bike shop
and have a look round and more especially ask for advice. Maybe even try one
or two bikes out
The great thing about buying in a LBS is that it will be set up properly for
you and be ready and safe to ride!
Buying on net is a tad more problematical -- depends who you go to!
You might be thinking about some of the very cheap bike offers that you see
in the papers -- don't!

Different people have different ideas about what constitutes
"stylish". To some, it can mean spending large amounts of money on
a bike with all the latest technical innovations. And being
seen to have done so.

To others, it can maen buying a cheap bike that looks like
an expensive bike, but which will fall to bits with a few
months if subject to rigorous usage.

You don't really seem to have too much idea about distances.
Or what's possible or usual on a bicycle.

Before spending lots of money you should get hold of a
secondhand bike of some sort, and have a ride around for
a few weeks on that and see if you like it.

Or if you just want to "pose" with a bike then just buy
the cheapest fashiest model you can find, and just
stand arounsd next to it, in the appropriate locations.
It will probably last a lot longer that way.

Won't matter for 2-3 miles a week, but if you get a bike actually goes
well that fits, you might end up wanting to do 20-30 miles a day! ;-)

Buy some "designer" trainers and walk. As a starter look at the size of shoe
you currently wear then try some on for size as lasts and feet shape vary.

Assuming you are of average proportions, you would ride a 22"/56cm road
frame *with a horizontal top tube*. If the frame has a sloping top
tube, you need to ask what the "equivalent" frame size is.

On a mountain bike, you'd be looking at around an 18" frame, but top
tube and stem length are far more important:

On all bikes, first get the saddle to the right height so your knees are
just locked out with your heel on the pedal (I know, you don't normally
ride like that). Adjust the saddle fore and aft until the pedalling
action feels most comfortable. Now rest the point of your elbow on the
nose of the saddle and see how much space there is between the tip of
your outstretched hand and the handlebars. Between 1" and 3", and
you've got it about right.
