Hi all,
I just picked up my old steed/wife's new steed from the LBS today after a final tune up. I put about $600 worth of upgrades into her including;
1). New Velomax Vista Wheelset $199 (was heavy mixed set)
2). New FSA Carbon triple crank $169 (was truvitiv triple)
3). New ISIS BB $35 (was heavy solid Shimano)
4). New 105 9 speed shifters $150 (was 8 spd sora)
5). New 105 12x25 rear cassette $40 (was 8 speed shimano)
6). New 9 speed chaing $20 (was 8 speed shimano)
I had it weighed and it tipped the scales at just over 19 lbs (19.11). It used to weight over 21 lbs. So my $600 basiclly bought me 2 lbs (and a lot of that is rotational weight to boot). The guys there said I did pretty well and that usually you can expect to pay about $1000/lb. I'm guessing that would be true if I started where I am now, but not with a bike that was pretty heavy to begin with. Any rules of thumb to go by?
FWIW, I did most of the wrenching myself with the exception of installing the chain (wanted to make sure the tension was right, and raising the front derailer (since the new triple is a 53x39x30 and the old was a 52x42x30). It was a good project. I just hope my wife takes to road riding now. If not I just got a pretty nice trainer...
