what are the requirements for such a bit of software?

we use a pre-configured spreadsheet at our club event.

i've recently hacked together a similar spreadsheet for lap counting &
timing at multi-lap ultra races.

I actually did find a free program on the internet after posting my
inquiry. However, it's DOS-based and apparently only works w/ older
operating systems, but if anyone's interested it's at:

We will likely just configure an Excel spreadsheet or Access database.

I have written an application for our club but unless you are familiar with
APL it won't help you but if you have data base skills then this is a better
way to go than a simple spread sheet. It is much easier to produce age group
and team (if you have them) results tables and also to provide real time
splits and results during the race.
