  1. Well after several months of fighting with a stubborn shoulder I've
finally gotten to the point where I can go swimming a couple times a week
and still be able to pull on my socks. Hurrah.

With that in mind I've started swimming with a local masters team. Wow -
coming from Alberta to Victoria was a big move but I wasn't fully aware
just how big until I realized that there were 4 master's teams that
    trained in this pool alone.

At any rate I've been active but out of the pool save for sporadic "the
shoulder doesn't hurt too badly..." bits for most of the last 8 months. We
got to the main set (scm):

    2x100im @ 2:00 desc 1..2
    6x50fr @ :40
    3x100im @ 1:50 desc 1..3
    8x50fr @ :45
    4x100im @ 1:40 best average
    10x50fr @ :50 desc 1..5

While there wasn't a lot of injury pain I'm guessing it's not really
healed yet. the fact that the im's turned into recovery for the 50's was a
pretty big hint. The difference in width between my fly catch the my free
catch seemed to be enough to put the boot in. Funny that just a couple
inches wider would make it so much easier. I guess, perhaps, the lats
haven't atrophied as much at the bis and tris. Hurrah for erging.

Public Service Announcement: Kids - don't get all old and broken. The
    recovery isn't fun!

  2. A Masters team that does those sets must be a fast masters team. You
must swim in the first lane. 100IM sets in 1:40 with an injured
    shoulder!!!!!

  3. Definitely faster than I can swim, but not outrageous.

Meters to yards is about 10%, so 100m IM on a "buck forty" is 100
seconds. So subtracting 10 seconds to convert to yards gives 100IM on
1:30 for short course yards. I'm sure there's a number of swimmers in
each master's club that can maintain that interval. The same guys and
gals that maintain 100yd free interval of 1:20 or 1:15.

Certainly all things are relative. I'm sure there are those here who could
run faster than I before (and after) I chop off their feet. Silly runners.
There is a lot of swimming here - a truly amazing number of world class
triathletes train here and there's several masters age group world record
holders. All the better to engage one's pride with.

Did you stop in and see Artindale on your way out west?

Umm... Well we're both Mikes, both in Canada, both post here from time to
time... but I just don't see where you're going here.

Let me think.... Martin, Martin.... could this be a crack at my swim wear?
Hmmm not likely. maybe something subtle regarding public perceptions of
self? Maybe but unless you're going for crack about attention I don't
    quite see where you're going.

Maybe it's the geography? Then again even martin wouldn't confuse Alberta
and B.C. with Nothern Ontario. Certainly I'd like to think that he'd not
give directions from Spain to Portugal via Norway.

So help a brother out eh? What with a near comatose response to the
Commonwealth Games and waaay too much verbage invested in an argument
over pedantic rhetoric this place hadn't seen much swimming related
discussion recently. I gave all that I had available. Where are you going
    with it?

Ontario is in Canada? I didn't know Artindale lived in Ontario. The
only province I know about is BC. Everything else is Eastern Canada.
Except for the Yukon, which is Eastern Alaska.

Make that 'everything east of Alberta' and you'd fit in just fine with the
Alberta Separatists. Indeed it is a big place - roughly an Australia
plus seven Norways. Perhaps I shouldn't have assumed that references to
being 'north of Toronto' wouldn't have immediately suggested Canadian
    citizenship.

Someday, BC, Washington, and Oregon will drop out and form a new
federation. If Alberta wants in, ok. Tyranasauruses used to live
    there.

Ugh - after more swimming in the last 10 days than the last 8 months I've
definitely come through the 'permataper' phase. Stuff hurts, other stuff
aches, all stuff be' a creakin' and a groanin'. Certainly there's not
enough work (yet) to have fitness and not enough rest to feel crisp.

Part of my brain wants to mutter something about time healing all wounds.
The bigger part of my brain wants to eat that little bit. Fava beans
    optional.

So I'm trying to sleep a little better, drink more water and eat at least
good enough that my mother won't have grounds for her comments regarding
rickets. Massage planned for the weekend and the roommate complained
about little flecks of styrofoam orphaned in the bathtub.

I still hurt and I just want it to go away if even to be replaced with
    'good' hurt.

brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass
over me and through me. And when it has gone past I will turn the inner
eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. only I
will remain." -- Bene Gesserit Litany Against Fear - "Dune", Frank Herbert.

    Yesterday's workout on my own:

    next transition point...

    100 double arm back
    2x50 kick with 3 breaths @ 1:30
