The recent weather is worrying me. It has been warm, and on Friday, they expect about 20mm of rain.
If that happens, there will be too much slush to go on the lake with a snowmachine. If there is not too much slush for me to go out on skis, I will.
I may have to wait untill after the ice is off the lake to measure distances.

Ding! Wow, I can't believe it just clicked with me. Micheal was going to use the GPs on a snowmobile to check the distance of a lake that he will swim in later in the summer.
Okay, stupid question...... if you had a buddy in a boat with you (and plan to again), why not have them use the GPS then? It will be more accurate since you might drift off course a bit while swimming.
Because, I dont actually onw a GPS, I am going to borrow one. At the time, I did not have access to it.

Also, I find it pretty accurate to use something the the Google pedometer to map out the course I plan to swim and get the distance via satlletie imaging and GPS coordinates. I just re-mapped it and I was only off by .12 miles from what I clicked on the web page and think I swam in competition. I should have clicked more of the beach as the start/stop points probably.

I have tried Topo maps, and I want an exact distance, or at least as
close

as I can get.
Topo maps? To measure distances across water? What's wrong with this picture?
thats what the gps is for.
the point being that a topo map across water would be a big empty circle (or other outline of the body of water) as I doubt you will swimming upstream against rapids (you are not a salmon are you?), nor would you be swimming down waterfalls - so the elevation for bodies of water remains constant.
You therefore solely are computing the distance between two points. As I said the online tools for my own 3 Mile swim were accurate enough to indicate the distance as 2.99 miles. Assuming I took more time to click more accurately on the actual water-line of the shore for my entry and exit locations it would have been more accurate.
And while doing it comfortably from my desk chair I didn't pollute the environment with snowmobile emissions.
