  1. Bratwurst and Sauerkraut

2 lb bratwurst (or other smoked sausage)
1 qt sauerkraut (milk carton-sized container)
    1/2 cup brown sugar
    ground pepper to taste
    hot mustard to taste

    Preheat oven to 350 F. Layer sauerkraut in a 12 x 12 Pyrex baking
dish, and sprinkle evenly with the brown sugar. Score the sausages and
place them on the sauerkraut. Bake for one hour.

On the infrequent occasions when I'm able to prepare this in my kitchen
(usually when my wife is out of town) I serve it with a side of mashed
potatoes and a dollop of hot mustard. Some folks drain the excess
brine from their kraut prior to baking (but I don't), and some also add
a sprinkle of caroway seeds (which I don't). One way or the other,
this is a dish best eaten with close friends - friends who are
appreciative of the gastrointestinally active, if you catch my drift..
