I do a lot of breaststroke in my daily workout, and there's this one muscle in my leg that I can't seem to stretch well enough, and it gets sore rather easily. I think one problem is my whip kick, which is sort of wide, but that's a different story. The muscle I'm referring to is along the outside of my thigh, closer to my upper hamstring than the front quad. I'm pretty sure it's not the hamstring, because I stretch that pretty well before and after working out. The muscle is definitely aggravated by my whip kick, and it's only sore in my right leg (which might dominate my kick, being right-handed).
Any suggestions on how I can stretch this muscle (whatever it is)?
Not 100% sure but you may be talking of your ITB. If it is ITB do a search for ITB and stretching. The pain is commmonly refferd to as ITBFS or IT band friction syndrome. There are several stretches that help, but a bit rest is also required.

I agree that this sounds like the ilio-tibular band. It is easy to stretch by lying on your back and bending your knee to 90 degrees with your foot in the air. Then very slowly move the knee in an arc across your body, toward the opposite side of your body, keeping your hips down. There is also a standing stretch where you cross your feet at the ankle and lean into your hip. The ITB is mostly connective tissues with a small muscle inside. People usually get pain either at the bottom, where it attaches to the knee, or the top where it attaches to the hip. If it gets any worse, physical therapy can really help--they do a fairly painful type of frictive sports massage to get it to loosen up. Madelaine

yea, that thing gets sore for me too (among other things) I use a high end massage machine to loosen it up. It works like a charm. Works on the similar principle as a manual deep massage, but much better and more efficient. this is what I use d-m-s.comd-m-s.comOpen ↗

The first stretch you described is perfect. Thanks a lot, Madelaine!
