  1. Damn, I hate it when do something clumsy or just poorly thought out in
the kitchen. Tonight I just burned the h*ll out of the tip of my right
hand ring finger while tossing potato slices into hot oil. I had
carelessly let the oil get too hot and, of course, the first few
slices to land in the skillet just spattered oil droplets everywhere.
    It's blistering a bit and I'm keyboarding carefully <eyeball rolling>
I had sliced the potatoes with my mandoline, which I am oh, so very,
very careful with, so why I don't exercise the same degree of
vigilance with exceedingly hot oil, I haven't a clue.

How do you treat a oil spattered burn? If I remember correctly, dad
once told me to cover it with soda powder... instead of run it in cold
water... I don't know how well that will work. For a normal hot burn I
just run it under the tap.

Did the potatoese come out good?

Major Ouch!!! So sorry to hear that. How did you treat it? Ice followed by
    aloe work well.

Ouch. Consider it a battle scar. Keep it antiseptic and dry, and try
to ignore it. You'll not soon be doing that again.

Well, at least you didn't pull the ultimate stupid thing I did years
ago.... dump smoking hot oil into the toilet to discard. Why did I
even begin to think that was ok? I was a teenager. End of story.

oh no it's not. . .did the toilet explode?

  7. I hope that there are no old southern blacks reading this ng, as the
spelling of the header's used to be a way of proclaiming KKK affiliation.

There's a scene in the simpsons where crusty the clown is performing at
the Apollo theater and his stage set is great big letters spelling
    Krustys Klown Karnival.

oh no it's not. . .did the toilet explode?

Well, you know that oil and water don't mix, right? Hot oil, cold
water.... the toilet was in tact, but I ended up with first, second
and third degree burns on the half of my body that wasn't protected by
the door (I don't remember why I tried to hide behind the door instead
of just getting out of the WC). The "rest" of the story is that I
went to the opening night of the re-release of Gone With the Wind
(late '60s) wearing a white dress and white bandages on both legs and
one arm. Needless to say, I was the talk of the entire movie theater
    that evening.

Oh, no! I didn't think of you getting hit by hot grease. Gosh that must
have hurt. Well, maybe somebody learned something by reading here -- you
    think? Hope so.

It hurt a LOT and for a long time. It was years before the scars
disappeared, however I still have spots on my skin that are don't
"tan" well - which were the worst of the damaged parts of my skin.

You don't have to be 'dumb' to do something like that, you only have to have
your mind temporarily on a different planet.

Seems like a good story to introduce myself with since it displays my own
clumisiness even though I know better and has bearing on a recent thread:

I was preparing potatoes to fry with my mandolin but you know how it so hard
to start potatoes going with the guard so I started the first potato by hand
and then switched to the quard to finish it off. Then the next one but
before I could switch to the guard DD #2 came in and in the commotion I just
kept on slicing and didn't even notice that the tip of my finger had joined
the potatoes on the plate (eww) until DD #3 screamed.

Knowing the usual wait at our local (Pacific NW about 30 minutes from
Vancouver, BC in the US) emergency room I decided to apply pressure and hold
my arm over my head. After a half an hour and increasingly hysterical DDs
with no noticible decrease in blood gushing, I agreed to go to the emergency
    room.

This was a week day, early evening (not a rush time in other words) and
after 4 hours during which we had been given bandages to soak up the blood
that was still flowing freely we were seen. I was given a shot for the pain
and a clotting material plus bandage. Time seen by professionals = 10
min.at most. Time in emergency department = 5 hours. Cost = nearly $1000.

I admit it was not life threatening but jeeze! Next time, I'll apply my own
bandages. And if I even use the mandolin again (it's been 6 months and my
knife skills have never been better) I'll use the damn guard from the first.

Also, the triage nurse was very confused when I told her I did it on a
mandolin. She couldn't figure out how a musical instrument cut off my
    finger!

    Blessings,
    Ann

They were excellent - it's another one of my "guilty pleasures." Just
scrub the potatoes well, slice 'em, cook 'em in bacon grease with s &
    p.
