I don't deep fry anything but maybe a couple of times a year. I have used
Mazola corn oil but I really don't like the taste of the results. What is
the right oil to use for better tasting French fries or deep-fried shrimp?
Or is Crisco the right thing? I looked for peanut oil, but all I can find
around here is one of those 4.5 gallon containers of turkey fryer
peanut-flavored vegetable oil. Help.
Thanks
Janet

Peanut oil is a good choice. I have never been in a store that didn't
stock peanut oil alongside the other cooking oils. Most of the stores
around here also have that wally style peanut-flavored oil. If you want
a large container of real peanut oil you have to go to a foodservice
place. -

safflower oil. Safflower oil has a high temp tolerance like peanut but
less distinctive taste of its own. I think it's a good choice but if
peanut oil is hard for you to find, safflower might be even harder.Crisco is traditionally a very good deep frying medium but researching
whether it will kill you this week, compared to last week's research
that says it cures warts and goiter, compared to last month's research
that says you will drop dead on the kitchen floor, compared to last
year's research that said it is a pale imitation of lard -- well, it's

I use canola oil - peanut oil smell in the house lasts forever, IMO.

JanetJanet,
Peanut oil. I found a plastic bottle of it at my local Acme supermarket
but they hide it on the top shelf and only one brand. It filled my fry-
baby right to the line.Andy

You've made it sound so much of an adventure I may try it. (the wart thing
needs a full moon ;o}) At least I can get the bathtub size of Crisco at
Costco. Thanks for the comparison of Safflower and Peanut oil. I just
thought that peanut oil would be around everywhere.

I've been using beef fat (tallow) to fry french fries the e last
couple days, which is considered by most to be the best - the Way
they used to be dome at fast food places. For shrimp I'd use peanut or canola oil.

JanetJanet,
I do have to agree with another poster that unless you have volumes of
ventilation it can really stink up the place for days.TIP: I put my fry-baby in my largest cast iron pan to capture any
overflow if it foams over so it doesn't drizzle over the counter and down
the cabinets and generally burn a trail in it's wake.Andy

I read the container very carefully when there was some wording (don't
remember precisely) that caught my eye. It's touted as the best for frying
turkeys, gives excellent flavor, real peanut flavor in vegetable oil. No
mistake. Read it a couple of times. Oh, $39.99 for 4.5 gallons. :o{

I think the OP was being a little cynical. Actually its a blend of
cheaper oil with some added peanut oil cleverly labelled so that if you
didn't read it you would think you are getting peanut oil. -

vegetable oil flavored with peanut oil.

Months ago, I bought a deep fryer at Costco, and there it sits still with
the 35 lb. bottle/can of peanut oil. DH isn't too excited about unpacking
it and deepfrying. For me, I wanted to try a few things, but if and ever I
get around to it, thanks to you, N., I will be taking it OUTSIDE to use.Peanut oil is not an oil I buy for any use, but it was the only one
acceptable to me for my 'requirements.' Tee Hee - Don't ask!
Thanks,
Dee DeePS - watching Ina - Barefoot Contessa -- and she demonstrated how she didn't
use a spinner, but wrapped up the lettuce in a kitchen towel, then slung it
around and the water went flying over her nice glass cabinets. From what I
understand, her program is filmed in her own home. I think she had her
window open (no blinds); not at my house -- too many bugs!Kidding aside, after watching the Chefology series, I have a little more
admiration for Ina and Paula. If nothing else, they had the good
forethought to choose absolutely adorable husbands!

Hi Dee,
When you take it outside, be sure to place it away from the wall of the
house. I saw a horrific demo on TV where the people placed the fryer next
to the house, the fryer boiled over and set the whole house on fire. Take
care. Did you get the peanut oil at Costco? I only saw a shelf sign there
once, but no peanut oil and never saw it again. If you got it there, I will
ask if my store can get it. Thanks

Janet, thanks -- because that is exactly where I would've put it. The plug
is built into the outside of the house. DH doesn't like to use extension
cords, but he will now!I've seen the big, big containers of peanut oil there over the years, I
would say all the time, but then again, I don't pay that much attention to
the large containers of oils, other than olive oil, so I'm not certain. We shop Costco in several states, so we have the best of everything,
paticularly the good Italian foodstuffs in New Haven, CT.
Thanks again,
Dee Dee
