I'm trying to find out who wrote this song. I thought it was a Tom Petty song - at least I heard him perform it on TV a number of years ago (prob. on SNL) and assumed (yeah, yeah, I know) that it was his song. The other day I heard it attributed to Lynyrd Skynyrd. I went online and tried to find out who wrote the song as well as who first recorded it. I didn't have any luck. Everything came up Lynyrd Skynyrd but nothing was explicitly stated anywhere that it was written and/or first performed by LS. Or by anyone else. So, does anyone have an album or cd out there with liner notes that say who wrote the song? Am I crazy when I remember it being sung by Tom Petty?

OTOH, many lyrics sites do provide the author's name. In this case, I could find no other attribute. Also, as a longtime blues lover, I've never heard another version. I'm pretty sure, but not absolutely positive, LS authored this song.

One article said "They learned to write songs together", so they might all be credited with authoring this song. But, I looked at a different album I have here, and there's a whole mix of people, including some not even in the band.

Yeah, I don't have that LP, so can't say for sure. You might look up a band history to see who was in the band when. BTW, if you're a fan, they were inducted in to the RnRHOF this year and VH1CR has been running old vids.

A lot of them went down in that plane crash back in 1978. The current band is not comprised of all the original band members.

The song is credited to Ronnie Van Zant and Alan Collins of Lynyrd Skynyrd.
It was released on their "Pronounced Leh-Nerd Skin-Nerd" album. It has been covered by other bands, though the cover versions are obscure. I don't believe Tom Petty ever covered it.

I don't recall Tom Petty every recording it, and am pretty sure he didn't. In fact, the only other versions of it I've ever heard were from tribute bands and bar bands! 🙂

Ronnie VanZant, who was the originator and lead vocalist died in that plane crash (which was 1977, btw 🙂 ), along with their newest guitarist, Steve Gaines and his sister Cassie who sang back up for the band. Steve Gaines had only just joined the band the year before, as did his sister. The band broke up after the plane crash (the other band members were injured as well). About 3 yrs later, AJ Collins (who wrote the song in question in this thread with RVZ), and Gary Rossington (another original member) formed a new band with 4 surviving members total. About 5-6 yrs later Collins was in a crash that left him paralyzed, and about a year later Artimus Pyle rejoined the others to reunite Skynrd. Since then they've had numerous changes, which I didn't keep track of since I wasn't in the business anymore 🙂
