SPAM, SPYWARE AND VIRUS PROTECTION
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Newsgroups (aka Usenet) are an important source of active email addresses
for spammers. Harvesting Software scans all groups and grabs the addresses
of posters. If you post a message on a newsgroup using your real address,
you can be sure that you will get spam.
Spammers also use software to search the web for email addresses posted on
websites. If you post your email address in plain text on your website, it
is only a matter of time before this software finds it.
You can look up "HARVESTING SOFTWARE" on Google:
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&q=%22HARVESTING+SOFTWARE%22&btnG=Google+Search
I use the Microsoft Firewall, a ZoneAlarm Firewall
(http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/home.jsp), AdSubtract Pro
(http://www.adsubtract.com/) to filter out the Pop-Up's, etc., FireTrust Pro
( MailWasher Pro ) to rid myself of SPAM (http://www.mailwasher.net/),
(http://www.firetrust.com/), Norton AntiVirus (http://www.symantec.com/) and
Ad-Aware (http://www.lavasoftusa.com/) to stifle all known datamining,
aggressive advertising, and tracking components. I know use Spybot - Search
& Destroy (http://spybot.eon.net.au/) to get bots and remove them and
Spyware Blaster - http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html. By
setting a "kill bit" for spyware ActiveX controls, SpywareBlaster can
prevent the installation of any spyware ActiveX controls from a webpage.
The newest SpywareBlaster version can even block spyware/tracking cookies!
Most of them update automatically to keep you well ahead of the hackers.
| There has been at least one abusive post by a copycat troll using my name
| and changing the -mail address to be similar to mine.
|
| If you see any further rude posts that look like they were from me, please
| check the headers. Mine contain a line that say,
|
| "Organization: Cox Communications
|
| The TROLL' says:
|
| "Organization: posted by Supernews"
|
|
| This goes beyond the ususal harmless trolling. Pretending to be another
| individual and damaging their reputation by using their identity is
illegal.
| I've contacted the troll's ISP and news provider demanding that his
accounts
| be pulled.
|
| Thanks,
|
