Memory Map query

hit the print sceeen key on your keyboard this will copy the current map
view to windows clipboard
open paint
then paste
then you can save or alter the map

Maybe not exactly what you want, but I like to save maps as pdf : this
is very handy if you want to plan a route then send it to someone else.

You can do this by installing a print-to-pdf utility (such as the
free PDFCreator) and then selecting that as the printer.

I'm using PDFcreator http://sourceforge.net/projects/pdfcreator/

But to save a map to an image I'd generally use the print screen (copy
to clipboard) method.

Have a look at:

Go to file menu, the click print.
Rather than selecting your default printer select the Microsoft Office
Document Image Writer.
Click on print - this prints to a file rather than a printer.
The file is .tiff format - open it up, edit it, save it as you please.
The best way about this method is that you can add the releif sahding
which makes for a good map (on the web at least.)

If you ARE going to do a "Print Screen" as detailed elsewhere remeber:

1. It only prints (i.e. copies to the clipboard) the portion of the map
currently on view
2. Unles you press ALT+Print Screen you also get any other windows
visible on your monitor copied to the clipoard.

Microsoft Office Document Image Writer is installed with MS Office.

Thanks for that. I've tried to follow but when I click on print to file I
come unstuck. Where does the file go? If I enter, say, My Documents, as a
file name nothing appears there. I've searched for all .tff files, but
nothing shows, so where does the file get sent to? Once it is saved I need
to find it!

Sorry Gordon, I tried to explain from memory - clearly not as good as
it should be!!

1. Click on the "Map" menu
2. Click on the "Print... " option
3. ** you can see the "Relief" options here - but play with it later,
just get it working for now! **
4. I have my dots per inch set at 1200 - again, have a fiddle later.
5. Click on the "Print..." button
6. A drop down list of all printers should appear (select the imaging
one as noted previously)
7. Click OK
8. After a second or two you'll be asked where to save the file, and
then you're away!!

Done that, and to a degree it works. I can save the map where I can find it.
Trouble is it is saved as a .prn file, and when I try and open that I get a
message that the file type is not recognised. I ask my PC to find sonmething
suitable, and it opens MM, but not the map I've saved, just the normal
programme opening procedure.
What's a .prn file, and how do I get one to open?

Yep, did that. Only trouble is, once I've cropped the map to remove all the
tool/taskbars the quality is so poor that it is impossible to read. I
briefly had (see separate thread) Paint Shop Pro, that worked fine, but that
expired, and without paying £100 I can't get it back. I've seen MM maps
sored as JPEG files, which are quite legible and I'm trying to do that
myself, but I feel that I'm missing a bit of software somewhere. Trouble is
I don't know what.

I'd ask the guy who's maps I've seen, but he's on a separate forum, and the
guys in charge there tell me that I'll have to wait a week to register
(stops spammers or something), and as it's a popular site - something over
200 threads per day - I'll have the devil of a time finding his original
post.

I awaiting Memory map to arrive .... in the meantime I have the free
demo and I see there is no "save as" option. Pity .. because Tracklogs
does, which I also have.

I have a copy of Paint Shop _Pro 5 from long ago which I hope is all I
need.
I cannot really help any further ..... yet.

MM gives you options to save map in a folder called Map Overlays(although
you can alwayss use your own). However the file format is MM "in house"
system. If you try to open them on a machine that doiesn't have MM installed
they won't work. Obviously MM protecting their interests, but there are
times when being able to show maps is useful.

Jpeg is a 24 bit format, ideal for photographs, which can have literally
millions of different colours. It uses a lossy compression to keep the file
sizes small, so it smooths out areas of similar colours. At high

I'd do a screengrab, then paste it into another program for saving as a gif.
Not all programs give you full control over gif options.

Oh, if you do save a map as a gif, don't use dithering.
