  1. Moab 6th year, 5 miler

    By: Daniel Olsen

This year, my dad decided to take all 3 boys for a trip with dad to Moab.
We did a lot of traditions that we had in the past years, and a lot of
things that were different. This year we decided to try going to a
different bed and breakfast called the Mayors place, instead of the Adobe
Abode we had stayed at in the previous years.

On the 5 hour drive to Moab, we had the PSP to keep us entertained. We
played a lot of NBA 2005 on the way there. We stopped at my grandma's house
in Provo, to rest. I enjoyed playing basketball with my brother, and
dunking over him on the 7 foot rim at my grandma's house.

When we got there, the Bed and Breakfast owner showed us around. It was
pretty big, and it had a hot tub. We also stayed in a very nice room called
the bunk room. It had four big beds, some chairs, a huge screen T.V, a
kitchen with a microwave and refrigerator, a big bathroom with two
showerheads in it, and a big library of videos for us to choose from.

The first thing we did was rested in the hot tub, while my dad went into
town. Afterwards, we went to a cool place called the Moab Brewery. I had a
type of pasta as a nice pre-race meal. I also had a nice strawberry
cheesecake for dessert. My dad was goofing around at the restaurant, you
know, putting straws in his mouth for a walrus imitation, putting a quarter
between his eye and saying "Aaaaaaaaaargh me mateys!" After that, my dad
went into some stores downtown. Then we went home and rested, and went to
sleep. I had trouble sleeping because my nose was stuffy and I was nervous
    about the race.

In the morning, we got up, and ate our breakfast that the people made for
us. It included a type of omelette and toast. When we got to the 5 mile
warm up place, we tried our best to warm up, and get ready for the race.

I started out my first mile at 6:07, about my targeted pace for the race. I
forgot to bring my watch so I didn't get the splits. I slowed down quite a
ways. The wind started to kick up a lot the last two miles. It was an OK
temperature. I stayed with a few 30 year olds into the finish, and then
they sprinted me at the end. I felt like I gave a good effort, but I ran a
    disappointing 33:47, which wasn't too bad, considering I'd run 2 PR's on
Thursday in my track meet (5:11 in the mile, 11:28 in the 2 mile.)

Russell (13) ran a 33:54 which easily won the 12-15 age group which makes 4
straight age group trophies for him and the first in the 5 miler. He has
always run the half marathon. Henry(10) ran 45 mins. which is good
considering he ran with a cast on his arm and last summer had a cast on one
leg for 4 months. Anyway, it was a lot of fun.

  2. WTF is this? A "Leave it to Beaver" episode? You owe me breakfast.

Good job, Daniel! With more base and experience you'll be able to
outsprint those 30-year olds. Congrats to you and your brothers. Sounds
like you had the usual fun time. Thanks for keeping us posted.

  4. Congratulations on your race and to your brothers.

Interesting report. I'd prefer to hear more details about the race
itself, scenery, battles with other runners, and description of the
course (loop? hilly? street or trail?) It was a good report.
    Thanks.

Also, did it hurt your ass? Mine was sore for a week. I'm not sure if
it was the running, or the guys behind me who buggered me the night
    before the race.
    Thanks,

    Ed
