  1. Hello all. My first posting to this newsgroup.

I've been lap swimming for three years now and enjoying it greatly - and joined a Master's program
this past fall. All of my swimming prior to this has been pretty much-self taught hence lots of
    technique areas to improve on.

One question I have - my coach is suggesting I can improve freestyle sprint times by thinking of my
    arms moving kayak style
    - in opposition - catch in one hand while the other is finishing pull. I wonder if I may have
misinterpreted this and how it jives with front quadrant swimming - which if I understand properly
means one of your hands should be starting the catch while the other hand is still somewhat in
    front of you.

Can anyone clarify this. Many thanks

You haven't misunderstood. Kayaking is a different approach than Front Quadrant Swimming.

Do a google search on those terms because we've discussed them at length.

  3. Maybe thinking "Kayak style" will improve your shoulder and hip rotation. Even in front quadrant,
there is one arm that leads, then you switch to the other arm leading, that's where you do the
little kayak flip, and get your rotation from one side to the other, with spending as little time as
possible being on your belly. I think. (someone more experienced please chime in if I'm wrong) I
noticed that when I stroke drill front quadrant, I spend way too much time on my belly. I remember
my arms, but forget to rotate.... *sigh* ... and they say golf is a mental game! 😉

If it makes you feel any better, I do that too, and sometimes I forget to breahe 🙂 It's not just
with FQ swimming. There's about 5 things I try to focus on while swimming and it seems like I can
only do one or 2 at a time without forgetting the others. One day though , one day .....

Maybe when I get in a better shape... My poor brain feels like it's pulling all these marionette
strings, but not all of them are reacting the way you want them. They run out of gas or something...
Maybe in few months or a year.

Last time I went from zero to athletic it took a year... Of course, I'm not 23 any more... I'm about
34... might take longer. We'll see.
