  1. Hi,

I wonder if those champions who were top in Barcelona also are here in the newsgroup, or read
    some on it?

If Mr. Phelps or one of his colleagues reads this, he is welcome to show up.

Yes, I was there. I won the 3000 meter sidestroke. What would you like to know? I'll pass on your
    message to Michael.

    ;-)

The sidestroke, or a variation of it, is actually tested for and a requirement when getting your
swimming instructor/lifeguarding certificate in Japan. The kids going for the certificate hate it,
since they've never learned it, and apparently passing that part of the test is not as trivial as
    it sounds.

  4. Yep. It's true. Same thing in Canada. I was competetive swimming, early teens, and also junior
lifeguard. I breezed through the lifesaving awards until one exam where the teacher stood there with
the clip board and shook her head. Turns out, I wasn't completing the pulling action enough and I
was "weaked" (given one black mark, two you fail). I scraped by with the rest.
