As part of the redevelopment of Dundee Riverside and the expansion of
the science/media/arts park, a shiny new bike path has been laid. Now,
generally this is a good thing. It provides a new connection between
two points, it has no turnings, give way etc. It is smooth, wide, and
flat. And I thought it would be a useful bit of the road network to get
to know, so I went and had a look last night.
Apart from having to dodge the rabbits it is a good cycle path. Off
road (not a bit of paint on a pavement) and generally useful. It just
happens to have been numptied so it is illegal to ride along it.
As cyclists are obviously unable to either read or look where they are
going, a chicane has been installed at the end. What's the big deal?
Well, it is not a shared use, but a divided path. It has a white line
down the middle and pedestrians have exclusive use of one side and
cyclists must stay on the other. The chicane completely blocks the
cycle side so a cyclist must either break the law by pedalling or
wheeling his cycle around the barrier, jump the barrier, or carry the
cycle. The latter two would be fine for a fit and healthy person, but
kids in a trailer? A tandem?
Why couldn't they just put a bollard in instead to stop the cars using
the path?

is a fence adjacent to the path.
