or possibly halfway up the Punt Rd hill might be good too??

wierd course. looks more like a tourism tour. perhaps the backmarkers could hand out brochures 🙄

I thought maybe the park on the corner of Alexandra Ave and Darling St - see them going 3 different times a lap.

I rode most of the course yesterday (wasn't game to climb Punt Rd in peak hour traffic). I tried to massacre the Anderson St hill, as if I was in the race, just to see ho much it took out of me at full tilt. It is a nasty little climb for such a short distance. Will be really interesting to see the looks on the faces of the riders as they near the top of it for the 10th or 15th time.

I was on the inside of the last corner of the climb, and let me tell you their faces were full of hurt. It was great to cheer four Aussies to a medal though.

Who else went down to watch? Both races were good and tight (although I've got to say it did get a bit boring at times).

Wasn't really able to get any decent info until race day (and no PC access wednesday night). The best advice would have actually been 'turn up at the front gate and ask for a ticket.' They were handing out spare tickets...

Today was grand. Much coffee early on, followed by several hours walking around Sth Yarra to peruse the action & take pix. Women's peloton was bit of a disappointment, no one seemed do any work & get organised until the closing laps.

The crash on Caroline St/Alexandra Ave was ghastly to watch from only a few meters away, any news on the SA rider? A brilliant day, a lot of sun, a lot of Coopers that prompted numerous a.b rowdies to start cheering anything/anyone who went past ... :p Highpoints: the thirsty moto cop was hilarious (Did he really want a traveller while still on duty?!), followed by Australia's cycling coach who was jogging around the course. By the end we also gave him a cheer & a pat on the back as he ran past. Bloody deserved it.

Now I need some sleeepppppp

One SAF rider rode past us with what appeared to be a broken collar bone, and one of the NZL riders was taken away in an ambulance.

I walked up Caroline and watched the group decend on about lap 5 or 6 - I always assumed it was going to be a bit crazy there, I only heard about the crash over the am radio but I'm not too surprised if thst's where it was, pretty steep and narrow through that sectoion. It must have been fairly early as there wasn't any sign of it when I came through.

I pottered down to the start/finish then back over to see one climb of Anderson street, then watched the last the climbs/descents of Punt road.

They were incredibly impressive, the effort of the climb and the attack into the descent was remarkable, particularly on the last lap where they had strung out it it looked to me like a flat-out sprint, but on a climb 2+ km from the finish with Anderson st still to come.

A very good day.

I saw one magnificent vintage fixie - a "Seagull" track bike with lovely lugwork and some faded paint- possibly from the 1940s and a few other more modern conversions - one at the start/finish and one leaning against the side of the Punt Rd bridge.

Well, i caught the end of the womens which was a bit boring. But i did see the isle of man rider stack right in front of me. I ended up meeting up with a cameraman travelling with the cayman islands rider. Managed to sweet talk my way into the pits without a pass before being bounced after about 5 mins. I didnt mind as i got to eavesdrop on the aussie tent right near it and take a few photos.
Then waddled around the course before checking out the anderson st hill around lap 13.. I saw a lot of "hurt" on some of the faces but the best one was when the south african rider out on his own rides up to the crest and wait for it..... does a u turn and stops to have a "chat" with some mates on the side of the road for about 5 mins. He was still sitting there as i left..
Call me ignorant.. but hello... you are in a race mate.. He may as well stopped and had a beer he was so relaxed.

Regarding the race. I walked up to Caroline St and it was scary how
quickly those guys were taking the off camber/sharp corners.

I've got one ex-track that I do't want to spoil the look of with brakes, but I'm working on another using an old Raleigh Frame and a double sided Normandy hub I picked up recently.

was an awesome display by the Aussies, both mens & womens teams were waaay to strong, smart & organised for the oposition. Couldn't believe how quick half the field got dropped in the mens race. We were on the anderson Street hill & by the time they got there the first time, they were strung out over about 3 mins! Highlight of the day, (for me anyway) was getting in 3 laps of the course myself after the race had finished, before some copper realised we shouldn't have been there!
