Hi For those of you who remember my post about a recent injury I thought I would give you an update. Following my referral to a podiatrist it turns out that I actually overpronate and am not neutral after all. I have ordered some orthotics and they should be here soon, I cant wait!!!
Just goes to show that you cant place too much faith in footscan gait analysis that you can get done at running stores, I had one and was told that I am neutral which is why I have been using neutral shoes, and probably why I am injured.

What? Without trying the right shoe for overpronaters first? You just got taken. Orthotics are a last resort, you should've been steered to Asics, or other good motion control shoe first.
I tend to agree. I recently switched to a "stability" shoe and I have been able to do away with my orthotics for running. It's only been a few weeks and a couple of hundred miles so I'm reluctant to call it a "cure" yet, but the results thus far have to be thought of as promising. I do still wear my custom orthotics for standing and walking in all of my regular shoes and I do think they have helped my condition markedly, so I certainly wouldn't deem them a waste of money and I don't feel taken. But, again, I really have to say that Bill is on to something. My new running shoes sans orthotics are far better than my old ones with the orthotics.
Oh :-( Am disappointed now, thought I was doing the right thing as my physio and my podiatrist both recommended orthotics. I thought having something custom made would surely be more effective than trying more shoes that may or may not be right for me and waiting for injury to strike?

You got taken, sugar coat it if you want, but you just spent $400 neddlessly. Now with orthotics you'll still be trying on shoes to see if they work with

I've hopped the fence......
well, Valerie, you could look at it this way... you can wear those orthotics in ALL of your shoes, and not in just your running shoes. THAT is a bonus of purchasing the way you did. don't worry about how this worked out; just look at how you will benefit from the inserts ALL of the time, and not just when you are running. and when you buy your next pair of runners, just be sure to bring the orthotics and tell the salesperson that you want a shoe that will work with the orthotic (you won't need orthotic-like features in the shoe).

Valerie, If your physio AND Podiatrist both recommended custom orthotics then maybe this is the best solution for you. I could only guess that your degree of pronation is such that a "control" shoe will not offer enough support. If only your foot guy said orthotics I might be skeptical as they are over prescribed.
I screwed around for years playing with finding the "right" shoe and got frustrated with constant model changes. With my orthotics I have much more flexibility in shoe selection.
So don't fret, you may have the best solution. Follow the Vet's break in instructions and gently ease into them.

Must you always be so rude? Having posted to this NG, I am obviously inviting comments, suggestions and even constructive criticism, but you are just downright rude and there's no need for it. The fact that I didn't mention that my physio also recommended orthotics is certainly no excuse.
Val, just excuse our resident [censored] or better yet drop dufuss in a kill file. It's malcontents such as wee Willie that helps define abnormal psychology and keeps shrinks in business. Probably home taught by Bundy.

Valerie,
Bill is a troll. He sees his role as putting as many comment into the group as possible. Because of his limited ability at abstract thought, most of these posts are just rude and obnoxious comments, many repetitive.
He does have a small percentage of good posts. The percentage varies over time. So you can killfile him and maybe miss some of those in exchange for missing many poor-taste posts. Or just ignore him.
Trolls feed on confrontation. so like a bumble bee, if you don't bother him, he won't bother you (too much).

OK, Valerie, you're going to hear this from MANY folks here, but if you want the full benefit of this ng, you must be patient with the trolls (*cough* .... like Bill R) and if you don't like what they write, kill file them, ignore them, whatever.
it's when you let them get to you that they'll really start to mess with you. don't be scared off... it's a good group for the most part.
