Mavic SL vs. Topolino AC29

From what I understand, neither offers much (if any) aerodynamic advantage; except for the "fun" with crosswinds on the Mavics (I haven't ridden the Topo's so not sure if they offer the same fun).

I've been looking at wheels and the local shops seem to give the Mavics a thumbs up while the Topo's get a thumbs down.

Having read the roadbikereview's on the Topo's, however, I want to give them a try. I think they would be more comfortable? But I just can't pull the trigger on purchasing because apparently they flex while cornering.

What I'd do is order a set of wheels built up for you. For $500-600, you get a set of wheels that blows the skirt right of Ksyriums and Topos. As far as aerodynamics is concerned, the Topos aren't good w/ those monster spokes, and the Ksyriums have been shown to really not be significantly better than low profile rims w/ round spokes. If you go w/ a good custom wheelbuilder, you'll end up with wheels that are true, evenly tensioned, and muy durable, all for a weight that will be less than the K's or the Topos. For example, with Velocity or Alex rims, Sapim CX-Rays or DT Aerolites, White Industries or DT Hubs, with 24 spokes in the front and 28 in the back, you'll end up with a wheelset that is around or less than 1400g.

And there are quite a few more about whom I'm sure people here will chime in. These people can make amazing wheels. Troy, at Ligero Wheelworks, has been building sub 1350g clinchers that are durable, every day rideable, and uber gorgeous. All of the builders will build to your specific needs.

The added benefit of a custom built wheelset, is that you'll have 400 payolas or so left from you 1000 payola budget......and you can spend that on some other bits fer yer bike.
