I bought a copy of John Jerome's, "The Sweet Spot in Time", which chronicles athletic excellence.
I haven't read it yet, but in perusing it, I already saw an anectdote that practically makes the
book worthwhile already.
According to the author, the former East German's tried pumping up the intestines of their swimmers
with air so that their hips and legs would ride higher in the water and they would have less drag!
Somewhat luckily for the swimmers, the discomfort associated with this outweighed any benefit.
Short commentary:
What a system that was. Bald-faced cheating and physical harm to the atheletes while doing it.
Is Cornelia Ender still alive? She was the steroid pumped monster who beat Shirley Babashoff.
Hopefully she has managed to overcome the excesses of what she was in. I realize she herself isn't
totally guilt less.
Too bad RSS wasn't around back then - they could have simply told their swimmers to lift their heads
and arch their backs to elevate hips and legs.
