It looks like I'll be off the bike for a while. I had a little
"accident" on the way to work Friday. My normal route takes me past a
house with a free-range dog that likes to chase me. I've sprayed him
with pepper spray once, but my supply ran out about a month ago, so
I've been using it as an opportunity to practice my sprints. The dog is
a mutt, but looks like a miniature rottweiler - same colors and stocky
build, just shrunk down to about 30lbs.
I normally approach rather slow then speed up when I spot him. I was
well past his home on Friday when I decided it was safe and put on the
gas. My last glance at the speedometer put me at 23mph.
I didn't realize he was waiting a hundred feet or so up the road. He
burst out of the underbrush at my left in a full sprint. He was still
ahead of me as he crossed the road. I knew he was going too fast to
stop. I was hoping that he would at least make the turn to run parallel
to me. I slid off the back of the seat and grabbed the brakes. His
snarl turned to panic as he realized he couldn't stop.
I'm guessing I hit him at about 20mph.
I was ready to go over the bars and managed to tuck and roll. The back
of my left hand hit the pavement first followed by the crown of my
helmet. If I weren't wearing it, I think my head would have missed the
road completely. Perhaps that is wishful thinking. I landed on my
backpack and slid a few feet. The bicycle slammed into the pavement at
my feet.
I got up pretty quickly and spotted the dog high-tailing it for home. I
moved the bike off the pavement, then walked to the nearest house to
call the county sheriff and my wife. Although the deputy took a report,
there were no laws broken (no leash laws in the county), so no
citations were issued.
My wife took me to the hospital for treatment. I am thankful that I
have no broken bones. My back is pretty sore and I do have a serious
case of bruised ribs on the left side. I believe the ribs are courtesy
of the seat. I have a few small scrapes on my left hand, wrist and the
back of my left shoulder where I landed. The biggest problem is soft
tissue damage in my left hand. The swelling there hasn't gone down yet.
I can't grip with it or put any pressure on the palm either. I'll be
back to visit the doctor sometime early in the week.
The bike is totaled. Fortunately, it is an older steel-framed rigid
mountain bike (think inexpensive). The front wheel is fairly bent, but
not nearly as bent as I expected. The fork was rotated 90 degrees to
the right when I hit the dog. My firm grip kept the bars straight. The
back part of the fender caught the dog and was shattered. The seat was
ripped all the way down to the plastic when it hit the pavement.
The most dramatic part was revealed when I unhooked the battery bag for
my light and slid it back along the top tube. I noticed the paint was
flaked off on both the top tube and down tube. It flaked when both of
the tubes bent under the pressure. The down tube has a really fantastic
wrinkle on the bottom. I supposed it takes a lot of force to lift
210lbs of cyclist up and over a dog at 20mph. I'll get pictures on the
web soon.
The question is what to do now? The police tell me it's a civil matter
and I will need to take the dog's owner to court. I have been told that
court fees are somewhere between one and two hundred dollars. Although
there will be medical fees, the bulk of them will be covered by
insurance. The bike had little value. The parts that are worth anything
weren't damaged.
To top it off, I doubt this guy has any money to cover debts - he has
at least three generations living in one double-wide mobile home. I've
"discussed" the dog problem with him before. So has the deputy. Twice.
Since he hasn't broken any laws per se, I'm wondering if it's even
worth pursuing....
More to come.
