    Pedal power the new tourism
    By Stephen Moynihan
    March 20, 2006

MELBOURNE has always viewed itself as European but the city now has a distinctly Asian touch with a fleet of motorised rickshaws serving the CBD.

Today marks the third day of business for Melbourne City Bikes, the brainchild of two young Melbourne entrepreneurs, Rhiannon Leskovec and Chris McLoghlin.

The pair met at RMIT while studying business and after more than 18 months of planning their fleet of eight citybikes are giving tourists a rare sightseeing experience.

The pedal-powered vehicles are classified as bicycles but have battery back-up if the driver's legs tire.

Complete with indicators and a global positioning system, the vehicles can seat two adults.

Yesterday was Tom Napier's first day as a driver and he said cycling around the city was enjoyable and suited his pre-season football training.

While the vehicles have a top speed of 30 km/h, Mr Napier said they gained momentum downhill.

Ms Leskovec said the concept began in Berlin eight years ago and had spread to more than 40 cities across the world.

While the pair had to beg and scrimp to start the business they had received a grant from the City of Melbourne, which had given them much support for the venture.

The business has 36 drivers on its books but seeks more tour guides who are fit and friendly and willing to show off the city. Drivers earn about $30 for an hour tour.

Bookings can be made from Federation Square's visitors centre or by visiting www.citybike.com.au.

Yay! Was it on page 4 of the dead tree version, like they claimed it
    would be? Not bad, eh?

Mayor John So was meant to be in the publicity shot, and I was very
jealous of the guy who took over after my shift to get the photo
    taken.

But since it started raining, So didn't want to get wet and shrink, so
some kid was in the photo instead 🙂
