  1. hi, I'm 21 year old student, 175 cm of height and 85 kg. I know, it's a lot. I'm quite strongly
build. up till 15 years, I've trained every day _hard_, running every discipline from 60 m to 3 km.

And then, I've stopped since our club broke apart, moved to another city etc. since then I've gained
20 kg. most of this ( 10 kg ) was in past year. After altering ( reducing ) food intake, my weight
gain stoped. now I want to reverse this by running. I was thinking of running for 5 km per day ( to
start with ) and gradually incerase speed and distance.

This is only my idea, do any of you have any propositions ?

    thank you, Igor

  2. I was the same height and weight and have lost about 37 lbs (17 kg) down to where I want to be.

I too have exercised all my life, but when I sustained a chronic foot injury and could not run the
weight started to come on, which made it even more difficult to run.

I attempted dieting with not much success.

My salvation came in the form of a bicycle. I bought a used one at a garage sale and started riding.
When I was sure I would continue in the sport I spent more money and bought a decent one. I could
ride the bicycle despite my injured foot. I discovered that cycling is a wonderful sport. You can go
out for a few hours and come in with that pleasantly-fatigued feeling that tells you you just had a
good workout, but there is no aching knees or feet.

With the bike (combined with a normal diet) I lost the weight. Now, that my feet are fine I am
running as well. I have enjoyed cycling so much that now I am a multisport enthusiast and
    participate in duathlon events (run-bike-run).

Two other things I would like to add.
    1) don't have your expectations too high. Be satisfied with losing 1kg per week.
    2) When you have lost the first few kilograms, that will give you a lot of motivation to continue
and it will be easier. Plus the normal diet will become habit and not work.

I did it and you can to. Good luck !

Part of the key to any exercise program, running included, it to build up gradually. Jumping in to
daily runs of 5km may be okay, if you are currently fit. But if you are going from little or no
running, then there is a strong possibility of injury.

Rather than planning on running s specific distance every day, start out doing your runs by time no
more than every other day. Try running 10minutes. If you feel you cannot run the entire time, walk,
but keep moving the full amount of time. If you can run that entire time without walking, then next
session, increase the time. Eventually you'll get back to running the distances you want. The whole
point is to allow your body to adjust to running.

There's a beginners section in the FAQ that gives more details about this.
faqs.orgrunning faq yes you are returning to running, but after a long layoff like
you had and the increase in weight, it will be better to allow you body to adjust again.

    Enjoy the run.
