Treck cable OCLV guides

  1. I asked a while ago and I want to open up the possibilities to any
    resource. I am putting together a repainted 1998 OCLV frame with a
    threadless fork. Since 2000, there have been both prototypes and
    production models of ultra-light versions of the frame, fork and I
    assume any other parts not provided by sponsors like the cable guides
    and the heaviest bit that seems absurd to hang on a SSLx or whatever
    the model is with the 110[55 OCLV and boron in the BB shell. Is this a
    case of making all the changes where you can claim them in the ads? I
    find it hard to believe that Lance would have allowed it considering
    the lengths he went to in the name of weight reduction (though I wonder
    some times of some of the mods are for show, to psych out the others
    that are carrying 2 STI levers in a group with Lance and he only has 1,
    it makes a statement and maybe that is the most important mod to make
    in racing bikes).

    Are there any vendors that would create a front derailleur hanger in
    aluminum? Steel is overkill especially since it can be easily replaced
    as a throw-away after a wreck. You might even save money if the
    derailleur hanger breaks off and saves the load from being focused on
    the derailleur itself.

    WRT the cable guides, those are much thinner and the weight does not
    bother me all that much. I am thinking of drilling some holes and
    placing some Nokon cable sleeves along the route and then I will jjust
    hot glue them in and replace them whenever I change the cables.

    Any ideas for improving the 1998 OEM parts here? Everything else is
    ready to go and I would like to ride it as soon as the California
    weather clears up for the season.

    It's all kind of moot anyway since there is an imposed minimum weight
    limit on the bikes anyway. I'm sure Lance could have made the limit
    easily with two STI levers. OTOH, we may never know what other weight
    they ADDED as a result - perhaps "special" stiffer frames for climbing
    and descending? Steel steer tubes on the forks (not a bad idea
    considering the speeds on the descent).

    Aren't the already aluminum? I can't remember the last time I saw a
    steel FD hanger. To get the "breakaway feature", you could just use
    an aluminum bolt (though I suspect it could snap under the load caused
    by a bad shift).

    Hot glue is SOOOO heavy though. Consider superglue. Use less, dries
    into an aero shape.

    Replace everything but the frame. Components have lost a lot of
    weight (on a cost/performance basis) over the last eight years.

    I think some Lemond frames used a similar looking front derailleur
    hanger in aluminum, but I'm not positive it would bolt onto a Trek.

    I believe the other advantage was that he could trim the front derailer
    more precisely with the (friction) downtube shifter.

    I'm not a tremendous partisan, but the Campy Ergo shifters already have
    ratchet-shifting on the front that allows simple and accurate trimming.

    Trek OCLV frames are very light, but not among the lightest out there.
    Most medium-sized (54-58 cm?) pro bikes seem to come in just a bit above
    the 6.8 kg weight limit (some are 500g over, even), so it's reasonable
    to guess that Lance's mountain specials were a matter of a stock frame,
    complete Dura-Ace group (but with DT front shifting), and fairly
    standard component choices for everything else, and probably came in
    close to the weight limit.

    Road bikes under the 6.8 kg limit usually engage in some sort of
    madness: my own benchmark is that if your bike uses aluminum cogs or
    carbon fibre chainrings, you're into the crazy end of components.

    This may be less true now that sub-1000g frames are becoming almost
    routine.
