9-speed 105 shifters will work with either a double or triple crankset. I'd think that the crankset and bottom bracket would be the only two things that you'll have to buy.

Just to satisfy my own curiosity, what do you hope to gain with a compact double vs. the triple that you have now?

BLING factor or peer presure that would be about it. Surprising the number of posers that ridicule a rider with a triple .

I live in the hills and have triples on my Felt and Trek. I try to stay with certain cadence and I need the options that a 9 speed triple offers.

Oh boy does this ring true. I belong to another cycling forum on the net and the pose(u)rs are constanty chirping about triples and the weaker riders that use them. I have a 9sp 105/Ultegra setup with a triple and, although I do like the looks of a double crank, I got the triple because at my age (44) and being a relative newbie, I thought I would need a triple. I have had no regrets so far. I was really glad to have that granny gear going up a somewhat steep hill on my ride home today into a stiff 25mph headwind. I have heard all of the arguments about the better shifting of the compacts vs the triples but have found that my setup shifts as smooth as can be.

Don't give in to the pressure!! I am over 55 and both bikes are triples, both have suspension seat posts, both have flat bars! I'm comfortable, racing or training. 😎

I, for one, would not bet on a compact double shifting better than a triple.

One of the (few) nice things about being over 40, is you really quit caring what other people think about you. Your friends accept you for who you are, and the rest of the world just doesn't matter.

Yes, I ride a triple, too, but I'm using the granny less. It doesn't help all that much. While it may make pedaling easier, you're pedaling for a lot longer. If I can go from granny to middle ring on a hillclimb, I get to the top a lot faster, and usually feeling fresher. I call this 'carrying my courage on my chainring' - in the midst of a long climb, I am so tempted to punch down on the shift lever and kick in granny, but wait... let's go just another 100 yards in the middle ring...

And a triple is not necessarily a sign of age. What with Lance making high cadence so popular, a lot of people are getting geared down road bikes. Not just us old fogies...

I just changed to a double as part of an upgrade to 105 front to back. Mainly because I wasnt using the little ring anymore. Its all about how you ride and what youre comfortable with. Try the double, but dont get rid of your triple setup just yet!
