  1. What do you guys find is a typical ratio of Pnorm/Pave (called variability index, i'm pretty sure) while pacelining in a group on pretty mildly rollingterrain? I'm just interested in a rough figure.

    On a 2.5 hr group ride my VI was 1.3 but that included stop signs etc. During a 4 person paceline it was just over 1.2. The terrain was mildly rolling.

  3. 1.2 based on a century ride last fall. I think the terrain has a much bigger effect on this than the paceline, however.

    One of my cycling books cites ~27% power reduction due to being in a paceline. I sometimes do trainer tempo rides which simulate this profile (ie, 1-min @ FT, X min @ .73FT), and see a VI of ~1.03-1.05. That would represent pacelining on board-flat terrain.
