I can't comment on the 305 but I've been using a Forerunner for the last two years and it's great, I don't think I'll ever go back to a regular cycle computer again. I'll probably look at the 305 this year for the integrated HR function.

It's hard to say if its worth it because I've yet to recieve a unit that is fully functional. The 2 reasons I purchased the unit was for the heart rate and elevation features.
On first unit the heart monitor was working but elevation was not. My house was sitting at 65000 feet. On the second unit the elevation is working but the heart monitor is not working. I am currently waitng for a new heart rate sending strap Garmin shipped last week, hopefully that will fix it.
I purchased the unit through MegaGPS but have been dealing directly with Garmin for the Tech support. Garmin's tech. support person (Brock) has been very good.
I used the unit twice without the heart monitor feature and so far so good with all the other features. Just started using the Training Software so its too soon to make comments.Jerry

After using a Forerunner for two years I purchased the Edge 305 with HR and cadence. The cadence matches up well with my Shimano computer. The main features that I bought it for have worked well. The ability to get total climbs and decents information provides better information than the graphs from the Forerunner. The graphs of elevation changes combined with the HR graph is very illuminating for training purposes. I did have a problem with the initial cadence sensor but Garmin was great and promptly sent a replacement. The GPS receiver is the best I have ever used. It is fast to lock in and is very sensitive. I don't expect the loss of signal like the Forerunner and I don't have to ride around in circles in my driveway waiting for the unit to lock in. This receiver is better than the one in my aviation unit (Garmin GPS-196). I like the unit however the price is steep! However I am one of those early adopter fools!
