After 7500+ Km my first trusty computer is showing serious signs of wear - 3 years old. The LSB told me I could either spend the $200+ now or take it away ang give it another 6 months or until I was sick of it and then do the repairs - So I am putting up with the odd slipping chain etc.
The full drive train (Shimano Acer) is going to need replacing, along with the front suspension (which was never any good!).
Any suggestions on the economics of doing the full recondition? Should I go up a level of equipment?
Cheers WD Note I have a new roadie which is so much better to ride!

All that should need replacing is the chain and cassette. Shifters and derallier should be fine after a clean lube and tune. The suspension also shouldn't just be dead, it should be servicable. Replacing it with something decent is big bucks.

Frankly its likely to be better to simply upgrade the whole bike

That's not many kilometres. You need a new chain and a new cassette. Try to borrow a chain tool, chain whip and cassette lockring tool from a friend; if you can't, they would be a worthy investment. I don't know much about suspension forks, but it should be readily serviceable. If the fork was never any good, and you are only commuting, look in to getting hold of a cheap rigid fork. You can probably keep your old headset.
