Funny you mention, I just took apart my Chorus right side pedal
yesterday evening just for the hell of it. Same as Record, apart from
the text on the pedal and the steel spindle. Use a 20 mm ring spanner
for this. Note that on right side pedal, the plastic sleeve is
*left-hand* threaded.

There's a circlip on the end of the spindle, holding the stack of
bearings and spacers. After getting that off, I could not see how to
prise off the sealed bearings without damaging them, so I stopped and
stuck it all back together. The Campag parts/maintenance leaflet (see
www.campagnolo.com then on left side: English -> Tech info -> spare
parts, choose year) lists the spindle and bearings etc as *one* part, so
if you want sealed bearings, you'll probably have to source them
yourself and press them home carefully.

The thing I noticed first about Pro-fit pedals was how easily they would
spin when pushed with a finger. The things would go around five to
seven times, while my Look-style Campy or Shimano pedals of the time
would spin twice.

Does your pedal still spin freely? I just checked mine, which I know
have more than 20,000 miles, and they seem fine. (I ride in the dry and
warm almost exclusively.) What tells you that yours need rebuilding?

I think the springs should be changed regularly, this is easy with a
4mm allen. The bearings are very well sealed and don't normally need
any service for lots of miles.

I have a Record Profit pedal that runs roughly due to having a pedal wrench
slip and jam into the plastic bush. It seems to have bunged a bearing,
since I couldn't get it to smooth out after I pulled it and messed with it a
bit. How much is the Campy cartridge replacement (oooh, I think this is
gonna hurt...).

I'll bet that the bearings are fine but the plastic sleeve is deformed a
bit, in which case it may be a viable alternative to not replace
anything. See my prev posting this thread, for removal advice. Then turn
each bearing and the plastic sleeve in the fingers to see which is
rough. /Robert

The body of the Look/Shimano could be more unbalanced (center of mass
further away from the spindle) than the Pro-fit.

Yes, I already went through that but it seems to have actually done a
bearing somehow.
