In CT, maybe 4 years ago, at Costco they discontinued selling wine. (TJ's
doesn't sell wine either there. There are many states that TJ's doesn't sell
wine.) Things are going backwards as far as the sale of beer and wine. New
Haven, CT had more of a selection that the other Costco stores I've been to.
Perhaps because they have an Italian population and they sold more Italian
wines, IMO.
It is odd though that one will find more Italian products in an Italian
populated region of Costco than in another. You would think that Costco
would just be Costco -- but it isn't in all cases.

Maybe it has something to do with the fact that when there is a service
station at Costco, they can't sell wine? Dunno. But, obviously, TJ's
doesn't have a ss.

I live in Kansas, which allows any liquor to be sold in retail liquor
stores, and groceries can sell 3.2% beer and wine coolers. Nothing is
sold on Sundays, of course, but there was a vote to change that, plus
allow wine to be mailed to Kansas residents and allow groceries to carry
wine. When I took a wine class a year ago, the distributor who was a
co-teacher said that the retail liquor stores did NOT want that vote to
pass. They didn't want to have to be open another day of the week when
they wouldn't sell any more than they do now (everyone just stocks up on
Saturday for their Sunday drinking), and they didn't relish the idea of
low-end wine brands becoming even more popular thanks to grocery store
sales.
I guess there was a study that showed that the really cheap stuff
sells at a grocery store while anything over $15 a bottle doesn't and it
causes distributors to ignore the nicer wines in favor of selling more
Three Buck Chuck (or whatever it's called).
I suspect they don't want internet wine sales to go through because
we'd finally find wines we can't get in state. There's one distributor
(a former Hollywood agent of some reknown) who manages to get some good
wines for us here in Kansas, otherwise we're stuck with very little
variety.

Rhode Island recently lifted the prohibition on Sunday sales of liquor.
It was made optional for retailers. Some open, some don't.

Yet Wally World can build a super center on what remains of the site of
the old Ames Plaza on Silver Spring Street in Providence.

It's right across the railroad tracks from my office which is housed in
a rehab'd iron mill. Cool building - the rest of the loop is mostly USPS
but there are a a couple of rather large lots owned by USPS that would
be prime for something like a Trader Joe's. The whole area is starting
to come up actually.

and wine, yet there are several Trader Joe's stores in PA.

I remember seeing mention of it a very long time ago and heard nothing
since. They have finally put it on their website as coming soon. There
was this last week: "Trader Joe's: The quirky, fast-growing California
chain, which specializes in low-priced specialty foods and wines, most
packaged under its own private label, is opening its first Minnesota
store sometime this spring -- the company won't announce a date -- in
the Excelsior & Grand development in St. Louis Park." I look
forward to learning the date.
