  1. I'm sure this happens to many of you but I am curious as what to do? Do you ever get to the point to
where you know you want to ride but just cant seem to get out of the door? I mean, I haven't lost
interest (and wont in a million years) but I find myself riding less and less. It seems lately
easier for me to spend a little more time in the gym or lace up my shoes for a good run, although I
enjoy biking the most. I believe my biggest problem is that I always ride alone, and generally
always ride the same trail. It's the best and most adventurous trail I could find with a 45 minute
climb of what feels straight up and about a 5 minute descend. After it all the others feel like I am
riding on the street. It is even not gathering my interest of late. I'm just curious what you all
normally do if you find yourself in this typical situation?

Sometime when you're out on the trail and feeling good, spend a moment and focus on how good you
feel. Plant that in your brain. Then when you feel like you just can't seem to get out the door,
pull up the memory of that moment. That's what'll get you back out there.

Often times there is something else in ones life that's causing stress or problems which prevents
one from enjoying what they normally enjoy. A form of depression if you will.

Another tip is to vary the activity. Put different challenges in the ride. One day I'll shoot for
doing my usual loop in the shortest time possible. Other times I'll take the hardest or bumpiest way
along the trail, not to smoothest or easiest. Also, in some very tricky areas I'll try and go as
slowly as I can and try not to dab, practicing balance and form. Mix up the way you ride so they're
    somewhat new every time.

I'd say mix it up too...sounds like you need a little variety, although, depending on where you live
that might be easier said than done.

Take a couple weeks off the bike. Don't get back on it until you really can't WAIT to do so. It will
    be good again.

I'd agree with this. Nothing worse than pushing yourself to do something that you enjoy. If it ain't
    fun, don't do it.

I've been like this the last month or two. Winter for me here and it was hard to get out the
door for the usual winter reasons. I was forcing myself to go out. I stopped pushing and haven't
been out regularly for the last 6-8 weeks. Now that spring has hit, I've had a couple of great
rides, am spending next week on holiday riding new trails in Canterbury and am really
    enthusiastic about it again.

Take a break, and just chill out. If you really do want to keep doing it, you'll get back into it.

Sounds like classic boredom from lack of challenge. Perhaps you just need a change of pace

Ride it the other way round. That way you'll do 5 minutes of up for 45 minutes down. Fantastic!

But seriously, try and build in a little variety. Go out an mess around on the bike, practice your
skills etc. I'm in a similar situation - there is precious little near me that is interesting to
ride, so I tend to ride the same loop over and over again. Last week I rode part of it the other way
round, went off and explored some side trails (that were nearly all so overgrown I had to turn
around and retrace my steps), did the tricky bits two or three times - and I had a lot of fun.

find a beginner and take them out just for fun.

I have been sort of going through the same thing, just the transition from summer to fall, kids back
in school, riding partners schedule changes etc. I made a point of scheduling a ride with Tuffgirrl
who has had a very rough year: ACL, collar bone and the final treatment stages of breast cancer. She
has been biking vicariously through my RR's which I always send her. We're going to meet Monday for
an easy flattish loop and I think it will be a blast.

  10. Thanks everyone for the advice. I took a different route with todays ride. It was fun, I didn't go
very far but discovered some new trails that were pretty ok.

I agree with you all on finding a riding partner. My best riding bud is off in Iraq. He is just as
crazy and daring as I am. Riding was never boring with us two, but I now am stuck with a 45 year old
weight weenie who is afraid to fall off his bike or is afraid to try anything that looks like it
could cause him fall off his bike. So normally I call him when I am in the mood for an easy XC ride,
but majority of the time I just do it alone.
