  1. Hi,

I am not really new to this WOE. I have read 3 books, and I did lose 40
pounds 7 years ago. I have started this time on about January 8th of this
year. I have had no cheats. My worse cheat is eating a slice of bread, but
that was the bulk of my carbs for the day. I am in ketosis but it is not a
dark purple. As best as I can tell, I am under 50 carbs in a day and most
days closer to 30. I feel thinner: some of my clothes are loser but the
scale is not budging. I have only lost 3 pounds.

Prior to starting, I ate a lot of sugar. It was pretty much non stop
munching from about 11:00 in the morning until bed time. I had some blood
work done last summer and although all my tests were normal, they were on
the higher side of normal. My blood pressure was also elevated, but we were
not sure if that is because I get so nervous going to the doctor of if it a
real value. I don't get high readings at home. I also had and still have
some swelling in my legs, but the doctor said that since it is only a
little, she wouldn't worry about it.

My potential problems are I am not drinking enough water. I am using
NutraSweet. I am drinking coffee, but only half has caffeine. I am using the
Carb Smart creamer. I reduced this to only once a day. I get some exercise,
but not enough maybe 10 minutes a day.

In Schwasbein it said that if you body is in bad shape before you start,
then you may not lose initially or you may even gain weight. Your body has
to first repair the damages. I want to lose weight, but I also want to get
    healthy.

So should I just hang in for another month and see what happens? I am
working on the water intake. The amount I exercise is dependant on weather,
so when spring comes I will get more exercise. Is there something else I
might be missing. I am really getting discouraged.

Here is what I ate today
    4 eggs
    3 ounces cream cheese
    2 sausage patties
1 slice of pizza toppings ground beef
    1 TBSP peanut butter
    2 TBSP tomato paste
    1/2 cup mozzarella cheese
    8 grape tomatoes
    7 baby carrots
3 cups coffee with heavy cream.

    Thanks for any help.

As long as you are in ketosis, it doesn't matter if the stick turns dark
purple or even barely pink. That can easily be affected simply by water
intake or the quality of the stix. If you feel thinner and your clothes
are loser, you probably ARE losing some fat. It doesn't always show up
on the scale right away. I know that in my case I can perceive (with a
CERTAINTY) that I've gotten thinner, but it won't show up on the scale
until up to a week later.

Another factor is that you're 7 years older now and it may just be
harder to lose than it was before. If you stick to it, though, you WILL
    lose weight.

ABSOLUTELY! I was discouraged when I didn't lose nearly as fast as so
many others seemed to do, but I WAS losing (I'm quite sedentary). One
thing that helped me learn to hang in for the long haul was, believe it
or not, my periods. A few days beforehand I would gain 1-3 lbs and I
did NOT lose it until AFTER my period. That was not an excuse to pig
out, though, since it would level out afterward, so I had to have
patience by staying the course and seeing what it looked like a week or
so later. It turned out to be good training for losing so slowly,
periods or not. Allowing yourself to be open to a developing a new
mindset that evolves over a period of time can be a big help.

Do you keep track of your nutrients via a spreadsheet or fitday.com?
That could help you pinpoint any areas where you might be over or
underestimating what you are taking in.

  3. Rather than just weight, it might be good for you to track inches on
    various parts of your body.

If your waist is getting smaller and the calves or upper arms are
getting more muscular, you are making progress of the right sort.

This advise is so good, I will have to try it myself, since I seem to
sometimes gain weight with my pants still fitting well.

  4. Atkins warned that from his clinical experience, aspartame could
inhibit weight loss in some people and that caffeine could cause blood
sugar swing problems. He recommended avoiding them. Many, like me,
use both with no problem. However since you are losing very slowly and
not satisfied with the rate, I would eliminate both for at least
several weeks and see what happens.

    And height.

  7. It's hard to tell without any info about how much you have to lose.
Folks who are trying to drop 10-20 lbs generally find it goes much
slower than folks who have a lot more to lose.

Some folks seem to stall with sweeteners, especially aspartame. And
adding some exercise would likely really help - especially weight
    training.

And for some folks, it is just slower. Saffire being an example of
someone who lost very slowly, but gradually shrunk herself down to
quite a hot chick. So... if you're a slow loser, you might wanna look
at her before and after pics to give you some motivation.

Real cream, not "creamer". Force the water. Caffeine and AS never was a
problem for me, but you never know.

I'd say in general that it might be time to consider calories and carbs.
You can have too many or too FEW calories. I ended up counting calories
and carbs and it worked pretty well.

Thanks for the compliments :-) I haven't quite reached the "after"
point yet, though. I got down to 127 and panicked a little at all the
sagging, went back up to 137 at the highest, and have been holding
around 133-135 for a few months while I've been pondering whether or not
to continue losing. I realized a couple of days ago that a) the sagging
is not much better at the higher weight, and b) I'm finally getting to
the point where I'm starting to mentally accept it as opposed to
rebelling against it, so I might as well continue on down to my goal.

  12. Hi,

I want to first thank everyone for their replies. For some reason since I
posted I did lose 2 pounds. This puts me at 5 foot 2 and 163. I started at
167, went down to 164 and then back up to 165 for the past week or so. I was
happy to be less than the 165, I know hormones play a role and I remember
reading that someone said to compare your weight from one month to the other
on the same relative day When I did this I went up a pound, which is why I
    was/am getting frustrated.

In case this matters I am 44. It seems that age makes a difference. I have
done fit day twice. (Last Sunday and today.) Last week I was 1680 for total
calories and today I was at 1480. I did have a Wassa cracker that is not
included in this because I couldn't find it and I don't have the label. So
to me my calories do not seem way off. My carbs were at 22, again this does
not include the Wassa, which I think is 7 or 8.

If you didn't have problems with aspartame in the past, can you have
problems in the present? The last time I had no problems with coffee or
aspartame. I hope this isn't the cause because it really helps when
everyone else is having desert. That is also when I use the Carb Smart
Creamer, as a treat, usually it is heavy cream.

Another difference between this time and last is I am in a much colder
climate. Last time I was in TN now I am in MN. Has anyone notices a
difference in the rate of loss in winter as compared to summer?

    Thanks again,

    Shari
