  1. Browsing around the Beeb's bird flu stories, I came across this:

    (at http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/4602144.stm )

"WHAT HAPPENS IF BRITISH POULTRY ARE INFECTED? Movement of animals, litter
and vehicles from the infected farm or premises would be prohibited and
the premises and its vehicles cleaned and disinfected. Birds that are
diseased, suspected of being diseased or which have been exposed to
infection would be slaughtered. Eggs would also be destroyed. A 3km bio
secure "protection zone" would be set up around the infected premises for
at least 21 days. Any people or vehicles going in or out of the zone
would have to be disinfected first. A wider 10km "surveillance zone" would
also be set up, within which vets would visit those keeping birds and
search for signs of bird flu. This zone would remain for at least 30 days.
Within it, movement of eggs and birds would be restricted. Poultry would
have to be kept within their living quarters and markets, fairs and shows
    banned."

Sounds familiar ? Although it's not stated explicitly, my guess is these
measures will go hand-in-hand with draconian footpath closures and other
access restrictions across the whole country. Except this time maybe
they'll promote it as being "for our own protection".

But maybe I'm just being paranoid. Anyone else think we're headed for
another summer banned from the hills ?

Prolly not - all birds will have to be kept indoors, so the footpaths won't
be criss-crossing the fields they're kept in. Surprised at the
disinfection for people going out of the affected areas.

    Very little will happen.
The F&M situation was an extreme overreaction/balls up by the government.
Hopefully they will get it right this time.

In the F&M time, I followed the rules to the *letter*, and drove round the
Yorkshire Dales without problems, except driving over a few disinfecting
    mats.

  5. This government doesn't understand the first thing about the countryside or
farming. There's no chance they'll get it right. Sooner or later we'll be
told that "Tony is in charge", then we'll all be in trouble.

Surely a very big difference is the massive amount of sheep and cattle
movement that was taking place at the time of F&M which spread it
rapidly all across the country, e.g. from Carlisle market to Cornwall in
    a day or so.

I doubt that live poultry is shipped around to quite the same extent and
would hope that a ban on movement would be implemented early enough,
coupled with keeping birds inside in areas where they might meet wild
    waterfowl.

People are focused on big birds (swans) at the moment but how many small
birds are infected that aren't spotted ?
It wouldn't suprise me if birdflu was already present in Holland and the
    British Isles.

Or are those birds being advised to stay in the country!

Talking of disinfection of people !!..........

During the end of the F&M panic, we attended a dog show at Llanelwedd -
the Royal Welsh Showground, and everyone had to drive through a puddle
of disinfectant then get out of the car and paddle in a bath of the
stuff. Good idea you might think, but once inside, most people got out
of their cars and changed their shoes for wellies due to the sodden
conditions. You've guessed it - the wellies were not disinfected.

All this performance caused an enormous tail back in the traffic through

With a bit of luck it'll wipe out the flying rats, aka pigeons.

I advocate a 100% cull of feral pigeons and Canada geese.

I'd have thought that we will all be in trouble if it gets into the
feral pigeon population. Most folk in the UK don't come into close
contact with wildfowl, and with domestic poultry only when it's on
their plates, so the chances of transmission to humans from fowl and
poultry seems pretty low. On the other hand, most towns and cities
host large flocks of feral pigeons in quite close proximity to large
flocks of people. Transmission to humans would then only be a matter
    of time, IMO.

Might as well! They take the blame for everything else! Without proof.
