Occasionally after a long run (for me that would be about two hours, or sixteen miles or so) my wife complains of a strange "metallic smell" - not a body odour sort of smell, but an unpleasant smell nonetheless. Showering is all that's needed, and I'd always assumed that it was some sort of metabolic by-product of intense exercise.
Today we noticed that my son (aged 9) was giving off a similar smell. He hadn't been doing any particularly physical exercise, though he is by nature an outdoor and active lad, and had two friends over to play.

After a long run, i used to smell of amonia. Probably something in the washing powder.

Like ammonia?

Apparently, the ammonia smell is due to the body burning proteins after it's stopped burning glycogen, from whatever little I know.

On the other hand, if it's not the ammonia smell, maybe it's someplace that both you and you son are running by 🙂 Iron/steel/other-metal factory?

Metalic or chemical? Anything like nail varnish remover. It might be worth popping along to the docs and getting a blood test just to rule out diabetes

Ed, I'm sure everything's fine. Those new houses over the former Three Mile Island site, and right downhill from the toxic waste dump, won't effect your health at all. Trust the governments word...

I sometimes smell some strange things towards the end of a long run, usually in the middle of nowhere with no obvious source. Perhaps it's a legacy of our evolution, our sense of smell may become greatly hightend when glycogen depleted, to make hunting food easier.

Sounds like you're dehydrated.
Martha
I would agree with that - a colleague of mine gets a metallic taste in his mouth when he starts to get dyhydrated. He's learner to recogonise the symptoms and take a drink. Although if he kept hydrated to begin with the problem wouldn't arise.
