Sometimes it's hard to guess what kind of time you're gonna run, prior
to the race. But it's pretty rare that you finish in literally half
the time you anticipated.

I had planned to run this morning's race with my wife, a beginning
runner. She is making good strides in endurance and pace, but is still
at the very dawn of her running career and simply not burning up
courses just yet. Based on our time in a 3.35 mile New Years Eve race
and recent training, I figured we'd aim for around a 13:00 pace.
Turned out she couldn't race today. Her knee had been giving her
problems and was worse this morning than yesterday - visible swollen,
and somewhat painful if she moved the wrong way. Hopefully she's able
to troubleshoot and fix this in short order; in the meantime I was
freed up to race.
I felt a little ambivalent switching gears: my legs felt a little worn
out from the week, whose mileage has come to 55 after doing more like
30-35 these last three months, and from yesterday's long run, another
habit out of which I'd fallen. Legs tired, first race of the season,
haven't been doing speedwork; OTOH for all that I've been measuring
quicker than expected on some daily runs. My PR is 27:17. What the
hell, let's aim for 26:30 and expect maybe 27:11.
If I'd been sufficiently early, I'd have warmed up about 40 minutes to
get that fat-burning metabolism in full swing, or whatever it is that
happens in this time frame. As it happened, I snuck in about 22
minutes with 6 x :10-:20 strides, and the last few minutes were a
tradeoff which cost me the opportunity to get to a porta potty before
the start.
So with full bladder, feeling still a little creaky, I slipped under a
rope to get in line behind about 500-750 runners (and in front of 4200
more). Removed sweatpants and jacket, race in shorts, long sleeve
shirt, and yes light gloves. 45F, 16 mph wind, a bit breezy but really
quite nice for racing.
First mile was spent weaving through traffic, passing a couple hundred
of the slowpokes who line up by the 5 and 6 minute/mile banners. 6:54.
Hmmm, doesn't feel like I can really hope to speed up and hold a
quicker pace for another 3 miles, but I'll have to just to hit 27:00
let alone 26:30. Maybe that'll happen naturally as I continue to warm
up.
Next three miles I did in fact notch up the pace just a bit, and
despite grave doubts about maintaining it, my last mile was my fastest.
In fact I was able to kick a little in the last quarter mile
(everything's relative; but I did continue to reel in runners right up
to the end) though it certainly didn't feel anything like "good".
Finished feeling seriously spent, a couple notches shy of puking up my
pre-race banana and accelerade but close enough that it crossed my
mind.
Splits 2-4: 6:31, 6:37, 6:15. That sums to 26:17, a :54 PR. Woo-hoo!
66.8% WAVA, my new high water mark. Previous was 65.9. Not that close
to 70 just yet but it is in my sights.
200 people finished ahead of me. None ran under 5:08/mile, so I guess
it wasn't super-competitive, but good enough for slow ol' me. A 57
year old dude beat me by over 3:00, and I also failed to catch a small
assortment of rug rats aged 15 and under.
Anyhow, I'm very pleased especially considering this is my first race
of the year. Another 4 miler in 3 weeks, same course I think. Maybe
I'll get under 26:00 if all goes well and the weather is again
conducive.
