  1. Could anyone tell me if it is possible to buy a small CVT off the
shelf, or the components (preferably in the UK).

    Thanks.

  2. Hi,

There are hubs I heard about called Freeride hubs. I think they may be
    continuously variable.

You'll find them if you do a search.

I think they're American. I'm in the uk too so don't know how easy you
    could get them.

You can get internally geared hubs such as Shimano Nexus or Rohloff, I
don't know if these would be of use.

    Good luck!

  3. Yes I think I could use an internally geared hub... do you know if the
old sturmey archer (or any modern day hubs) can be used to change gear
(and click into gear) without the chain needing to be rotated? Are
there any that are quite cheap (less than £100)?

  4. The Shimano Nexus hub is available in a number of different speed
    versions.

I have an 8 speed one and find it very reliable. They cost under £100.

They do 3,4 and 7 speed versions too which are cheaper.

If you look on Shimano's website you'll find technical information.

You could probably get a 3 speed steel bodied Sturmey Archer hub for
    around £30.

The chain doesn't need to rotate to change gear. This enables you to
    change whilst stationary.

  5. http://nupace.com/

I saw some on eBay last year for $999 USD.

"By simply twisting the shifter handle, the rider can select any gear
ratio that feels right at any given time instead of having to accept
the predetermined gear ratios in a step-wise fashion that the cog
cassette offers. This allows the rider to pinpoint the desired gear
    ratio for optimal performance. "

The price listed on their site is $999. Now let's see... How much
Shimano/Campy (insert high-level product line) stuff could I buy for
    that much?

    A heap of stuff!

    I'll pass. Nice try.
