Is it the bike that you dont like or the CVT? I'm actually looking for
one to use on a weight lifting system... I thought that maybe they were
used on bikes and could be bought from a store, hence my posting here.

CVT's have no use on a mountain bike, not that it's any better on a road
bike. But anyway that's not why you want it.
Now I am really confused. Isn't the whole idea of weight lifting to get
resistance? If you make it easier as the pull gets harder, doesn't that
defeat the purpose?

You dont necessarily make it easy using a CVT... you can change the
diameter ratio to make the lifting more difficult. I'm referring to
this kind of setup..

Use the mech from a rim or roller bike trainer.

yeh, I dont want to add any resistance to the mechanism though (like
the roller bikes)... it just needs to use a pulley mechanism and thats
it. So are there any other bikes (other than the merc bike in the link)
that use this CVT mechanism? I need to just take the CVT off the bike.

Try asking in rec.bicycles.tech though the system you're after
isn't really suitable for bike use. Even for cars/ vans they're not so
common. Does it have to be continuously variable? Would a hub gear like
the nexus with eight ratios be close enough for purpose?

These are also known as "torque converters".

A torque convertor is a different beast to the belt-based CVT
the OP has described.

Yes I think I could use an internally geared hub... do you know if the
old sturmey archer (or any modern day hubs) can be used to change gear
(and click into gear) without the chain needing to be rotated? Are
there any cheap internally geared hubs... they all seem to be over
£100?

Ok a real answer to the question.......
Many machine tools use CVT systems using a ball between two flat discs. The
ball turns on an axis and the angle of this axis can be varied, one disc
drives the other via the ball and ratio is varied by angling the ball.
You may find them in a good scrapyard.Or try a secondhand machinery dealer

get a Snowmachine.
They are the original CVT. Almost every snowmachine I know has it.
Alternatively, you may want to look at Ford or Nissan/Infinity.

yeh, not many snow machines in the uk... although I have just found out
that mini motos have them and I'm looking for quite a small one so this
could be useful. I'm trying to find out the ratio between the max/min
diameter of the two pulleys though.
