I dont know why image concious people want to drive around in a car which labels them selfish and stupid. Maybe they think people will be impressed as they struggle to park or something?

Two of the SUVs this British journalist cites as examples of American
wastefulness are of British manufacture. A third, the Jeep Cherokee, seemed
at least as popular in Surrey when I was there as in any American
neighborhood. His description of American SUV driver's behavior sounds an
awful lot like wealthy British parents doing the school run in their Chelsea
tractor.

FWIW, the maximum Interstate Highway (motorway) speed limit in Arizona is 75
mph, not 60 as this journalist states, and the maximum speed limit on other
roads outside cities is 65, not 45-50 as this journalist claims.

Maybe the Daily Star reveiwer has been reading Bobby McWheeler's
damning comments about the Toyota F3 'living room on wheels'. Probably
not though!

Why shouldn't people be allowed to spend their disposible income how they
like? How much of your bitterness is tinged with envy?

I'm not really defending SUVs, I think the planet needs them like a hole in
the head *but* if fuel remains relatively cheap and folk can afford to fill
the tank, then they'll continue to buy them. When either taxation goes up
or fuel prices rise enough then they'll stop buying them.

It's not the fuel consumption I object to, it's the way you can't see
over them at traffic lights, they spell certain death to the driver of
any "normal" car that they hit and they're awful in car parks (too wide,
doors just the right height to miss any kind of rubbing strip on your car).

Plus they seem to be driven by two types:

1) Fat red-faced slob who doesn't give a fsck about anyone else on the road

2) Tiny blonde woman who doesn't have the ability to see over the
stering wheel, let alone park the thing.

And they always pull into the parent-and-child parking spaces at
Sainsburys, before disgorging a couple of teenage kids from the back
seats. And there was me thinking those spaces were for people who
needed to shoehorn babies into child seats.

Oh yes, I forgot another huge reason to hate them. Creeping invasion of
American culture.
