Showing yet again, how much they suck since they started being more
gimmicky than functional. Their greed-based obsolescence of what
worked well for so long is going to drive them full circle.

Ugh. It's gonna suck grinding off those forged, machined logos while
making sure no little flecks get into the pulleys.

Is it a general bad vibe about shimano this days? I'm looking at a new
bike but barly dare to look at sram ones due to that I never have
actually used sram equipped bikes. I hear XO should be great, but that
tells me nothing.

I wouldn't look at anything other than SRAM. I have both X.0 and X.9
and they are the smoothest shifting trouble free drivetrains I have ever
used (an I have used XT and XTR). Plus, who wants to deal with that
ugly bulky mess of a dual controller.

My Sram stuff rules so I'll have to side with Ride ALot.

I don't have the percentages of Shimano vs. other company's sales, but
in fairness I'd say there's a large silent majority who use Shimano
stuff and like it fine.
With that said, I tried some low end SRAM trigger stuff last year and
it was bangin' compared to my ride's late 90's Shimano XT
shifters/der's.

I know, right? I think they hired Tonka Toys' Big Boy Manly-Man Machines'
marketing director to come up with a new look for this new round of Shimano
[censored].

A corroded, old SRAM ESP 3.0 derailleur-shifter setup on a Trek came in a
couple days ago. I told the customer new cables and housing were needed.
Once I got it in the stand, I tried it out, and wow, it shifted perfectly.
Not only that, but when you begin the shifting actuation, the derailleur
moves right then and there... there's no "preloading" of the cable, there's
no cable stretching, no play, etc. due to the 1:1 ratio.
When you shift, the derailleur MOVES. There's no need to hold the shifter
thumb button down to get it to shift. Click, shift, click, shift with SRAM
instead of click, hold, wait, clatter, catch, fall off, catch, shift like it
is with Shimano. This is for cheapo bikes that I have to fix every day,
BTW.
One thing that has really cut me off from Shimano: Deore is supposed to be
competition-level, right? Why do I find Deore rear derailleurs losing all
spring tension after 6 months on customers' bikes? Why are the springs so
ridiculously weak straight from the factory? Why is there always hesitation
with Shimano MTB derailleurs, even after solvent flushing of the pivots?
Any of you with Campy know exactly what spring tension issues I'm talking
about if you've used Shimano and Campy back-to-back.

Or don't know any better.

I didn't know that all-plastic could be that bad.

Some news on the new XTR stuff, including Shimano's push for 140mm rear
spacing so that we can finally get what we all so desperately need --
14 gears in back.

But this is really just a way to sucker you guys into checking out the
wicked GRS Moser time trial bike at the bottom of the page. Sick stuff.

I agree with JD. Seeing how SRAM makes a better product, Shimano is
going to copycat bigtime, and even fail in the process, although it'll
look resemblant, it won't function as well.
