  1. Just getting back into the MB game and have been using my skateboard helmet both on road and trail.
    It's a Pro-Tec 'Classic' ABS hard-shell with double density foam inside. It weighs 450 grams and is
    certified to the CE 1385 multiple impact standard - a European/International standard.

    Question 1 for engineers in the NG: How does CE 1385 stack up against the CPSC standard used for
    bike helmets?

    Question 2 for XC riders/boardheads: Does the ~300 gram, molded foam bicycle helmet provide better
    protection for XC riding than the 450 gram hard-shell + soft interior foam helmet?

    Understand the molded foam helmet provides better structural support but less impact resistance.
    Does this translate into better protection for the MB + XC rider?

    Hugh,

    Basically, the CE1385 is a European standard for a multiple impact helmet, and the CPSC is a US
    standard for a single impact helmet. Therefore, the CE1385 certification means the skate helmet you
    have is made tougher to stand up to multiple impacts and should be fine for mountain biking use. You
    must also recognize that good venting and airflow are superior in a bike-specific single impact
    helmet. Either route you choose will give you the protection you need, but you must choose between
    having a lightweight, comfortable, well-vented helmet good for one crash, or a heavier, less
    comfortable, poorly vented helmet made to withstand multiple crashes.

    Most people prefer the first choice.

    Single impact....uh-hhmm....errr....good job I've stopped falling on it anymore really, finally got
