I've just bought some new cycling shoes off the net, and I received them today. I didn't really
take too much notice in the pictures, but I can see three screw holes on the front of them, and
also another four which move with the shoe on a track(presumably when you pedal). Can anyone tell
me what these are for, and what I'd need to be able to use them on my pedals?!
The 'moving' holes for cleats for use with cleated pedals, such as SPDs. The ones which slide should
not move once you've actually got the cleats attached and tightened up, they only move so that you
can position the cleats directly under the balls of your feet.
I'm not sure what the holes at the front are. Some mountain bike shoes take studs - just exactly
like football studs, and indeed you can use football studs when you lose the original ones - to help
in climbing seep muddy banks you can't cycle up, and that's what these holes may be; but equally
they may be for some kind of cleat I'm unfamiliar with.
If you haven't ridden with cleated pedals it can be slightly scary at first - you need confidence
that you actually can get your foot out when you need to, and it's worth having a static practice
session before you first go out on the road - but it is very well worth it in increased power and
pedalling efficiency, and, in my opinion but not everyones, comfort.
